Help me Understand
 

My yorkie just got his Luxating patella surgery done. He always used pull his right leg up when walking. But the surgery was done on his left leg. The vet said beacuse of compensating the balance and pain. he is pulling his leg. also did this happen to anyone.

Which leg actually had the LP? Usually the leg they lift up is the one they're having problems with because the kneecap 'locks up' while out of place. I'm not familiar with your vet's thinking on this. Hopefully someone who knows more will be able to answer better.

He always picked up his right leg... I am freaking out now.... but the surgeon said he had good grade of luxating patella on the leg he operated. Now my poor son needs to get the whole thing again.

I am also under the impression the leg being lifted is because of it locking up. I do know it is common for LP to be prominent in both legs.....

only thing i can think of is that the grade was higher in the left leg but the right leg bothered him more. Since the grade was higher in the left leg tho he left it necessary to do the surgery on that one first. ex: my yorkie has grade 3 in both back legs. she doesn't lift either of them up to show they bother her. Some dogs have grade 1 or 2 in a leg and lift or skip with them all the time.

hmmmm usually it is the one they were lifting that is bothering them not the other - the other one is affected as well because more weight is shifted on to the other one not lifted and eventually that one not lifted gets worse if the other one is not corrected - did a board certified orthopedic do this surgery or a regular vet :( My girl has LP 4 in both back legs and permanently out and she hurt her acl and thankfully is doing fine now. She had xrays on both back legs and her patellas cannot be manipulated back into place at all. She only lifted the leg that was hurt not the other. For peace of mind I would call an orthopedic and honestly if the other one has to be done I would go to a bc orthopedic -- i am not feeling comfortable with the info you were given but obviously there is nothing you can do at this point and you will have to wait it out but if it heals up and he is still lifting the other leg I would not be very happy if i were you :( i just really hope the vet did not screw up and do the wrong leg then back tracking from his mistake as that is why they mark human bodies and ask several times before surgery like was done on my achilles tendon before surgery as mistakes have happened -this is not sitting well with me

Before bilateral LP surgery Sadie was holding up her right leg (Grade 4). She had never acted like her left leg hurt at all but when the ortho examined her he said her left leg was a grade 3. He suggested we do both knees at once and now she is back to her old self. I would definitely get a second opinion if I were you. Hope your little one is better soon!
