Help : My yorkie has an extra nail that curls like a corkscrew or pigs tail.
 

My yorkie Viny has an random extra nail. He had is dew claws removed and it's up higher and more toward the inner of his leg than a his dew claw. There is a random nail growing from his skin. There is no "pad" for it too grow above and it's only on one of his legs. I know it's not related too his normal nails it's more in the middle of his leg, about where human wrists would be about 1/2 an inch above his dew claw.

I do not have my camera right now, however when I get home I will get a picture as soon as possible but it curls just like a pigs tail. It makes a very tight corkscrew. I know it sounds weird... I don't know what too do. My normal vet is not in the office so I call the first vet I could find and they don't know anything about it. Its pretty long so I assume it's been there for a while so he can wait until tomorrow until I call my normal vet I just though maybe you guys would know something about it.

I believe I have heard of this problem or seen it before. It seems very foggy though where I heard of it. I want too say it's related too him consuming too much calcium? He has gotten his nails caught in his fur before and I have found him screaming on the floor before trying too stand up but I have always gotten there too late too see exactially what he was caught on. I am thinking this may have happened before and he just pulled it out. Thats possibly where I have seen it before I might have found his removed nail on the floor and not related the two too eachother.

Anyway any leads on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

As a groomer i've seen dogs with these weird nails. is it really thin and totally not like his other nails?

i don't know what you can do about it, maybe the vet can totally remove it. i would think its easier to do then a normal nail removal since its smaller and doesn't seem to have much behind it.

It actually looks just like his other nails, and is just as thick as them however he is freakishly small (1 lb 6 ozs ) so it could very well be the same thing. I did want too just cut it off I am concerned it might have a quick too it and I did not want too cause him any pain or make him bleed. Of course its black so I cant see a quick. I am also wondering if it hurts him while it grows in. I can't help but think a random nail growing out of your skin does not hurt. I wonder where it is coming from. I am debating if I should call an emergancy vet.

I know that sometimes the dew claws can grow back if not removed properly, maybe its just a dew claw trying to grow out again? I wouldn't go to an emergency vet for it. It'll be ok to wait for your normal vet to get back.

whatever it is, its definitely not an emergency at the moment. I'd just take him to your regular vet and see what they think.
