diarrhea and vomiting hello, I just recently purchased Meeko about a week ago and the breeder gave her a clean bill of health. Just to be on the safe side, I brought her to the vet Saturday morning along with a stool sample. The vet also said that she seemed healthy with no parasites or congenital defects. Then, she gave me a sample of Heartguard and Frontline to test out. I brought Meeko home and gave her the Heartguard and later on that night, she started getting the poops which lasted about 3 days. I assumed that it was from the Heartguard medication and her stool just recently began getting harder however, its not as hard as it had been before Heartguard. She's kept her appetite and she seems well hydrated. When i took her for a walk this morning, it looked as if there was a bit of blood in her stool but when she poo'd again later, it looked normal. i gave her a couple pieces of Natural Choice treats and she threw it up a little later. I'm a first time dog owner and I'm not sure if i'm just overreacting but any suggestions? |
No you are not over reacting. Have you called the vet and told them about the symptoms? If not you need to asap. |
Hydrated If she's not able to keep food down give her some nutri-cal if you don't have that give her kero syrup and syringe water or pedialyte into her mouth till you can get her to the vet. |
How old is she? Did the vet know that you *just* got her...and he was still okay w/ starting these 2 things right away :(? |
This sounds exactly like what Capone had. It seems as if she has an infection (sorry can't remember the name). That dogs can get when under stress, like moving to a new home. It doesn't show up in the stool so the vet can't tell until they show the symptoms. They treat it with an antibiotic and the symptoms get better soon. I hope this is what it is because it's not very serious and the antibiotic clears it right up. Hope your baby gets to feeling better. |
I looked it up and I believe it's called coccidia, you should get her to the vet before she gets worst. |
neon green poop! i called up the vet today and they were booked so she told me to keep an eye on her and if she gets worse then to bring her in tomorrow. i gave Meeko her regular schedule of food and she gobbled it right up so i thought she was feeling better. i took her for a walk later on and she poo'd and it came out a neon green color! i called the vet again immediately and updated her and she said that it could be from the Nutra Natural Choice treats that i have been giving her. she recommended that i boiled some chicken and rice and feed it to her and if her stool doesnt harden up by friday night, she'll book me an appointment right away. has anyone done this chicken and rice thing? do i just mix it up and give it to her while its still hot? please help! |

are you feeding her the same food as what she was eating prior to you getting her? any diet change can make the poop different .. keep an eye on the blood though that can be scary stuff! boil some skinless chicken fillets when cooked get some rubber gloves on and mix it in with some cooked rice let it cool don't give it to your girl while its still hot it will burn her mouth.. baby food warm is how our dogs eat it .. or go to a quality pet store and buy it ready done.. its usually pre-cooked frozen |

i made Meeko the boiled chicken and rice and she loved it. i was worried i would have to force feed her but she gobbled it up so fast i was worried she would choke! she just passed a stool about an hour ago and its back to normal colors but still very soft. i'm going to keep giving her the chicken and rice until friday night and then if it doesn't improve, the vet told me to schedule and appointment. wish me luck! |
Good Luck ! I hope she will be ok. I would have another stool check just to be sure nothing was missed the first time. And make sure you cut the chicken small enough so she can't choke on it. |

It does not always show up in the stool sample especially in the early stages, I've been told this by two different vets. If it is treated in the early stages your dog will be just fine and bounces back in less than 48 hrs. Of course if it's untreated it can kill your dog, but I took my dog to the vet at the very first sign of him getting sick and it cleared up before it got that far. |
Yes this is why the stool should always be rechecked in 2 wks and then again in another 2 wks. |
