Has anyone dog had eye ulcers?
 

I took Marly to the vet, turns out he has an ulcer in each of his eyes. Has anyone had this happen? Would you mind sharing your story with me? I just want him to be better, they gave me ointments to use over the next week.

I would assume since it's both eyes the condition was caused by an infection?

Reese had a punctuation wound in one of his eyes...aka an ulcer. It healed very quickly and no long term affects.

Be diligent giving the medication and follow any other advice from your vet. It is possible for the condition to become severe enough the eye itself has to be removed.

This would only happen if the owner neglected the dog and did not give the ointments diligently to their pup, right? I don't think it will get that bad! Jeeze i hope that doesnt happen! Does that happen if you give them the ointments still?:confused::(:thumbdown

I had a male yorkie that tried going under my parents chain link fence and ulcerated his eye many many years ago. It was really bad, but the ointment and drops healed it up with no problems. Hope he gets them cleared up quickly.

Lady has dry eye and is prone to ulcers. Did they check his tear production to make sure that isn't the cause of his ulcers? Both eyes is unusual.

In most cases they clear up quickly. The vet probably gave you an antibiotic drop or ointment. Atropine is often also prescribed to help with the spasms and pain.

Did the vet tell you to keep an Elizabethan collar on him so he can't rub at his eyes?

My vet doesnt work on Sunday, so i wound up going to the one at Petsmart. No he didnt say anything about the eliz. collar, Marly has been doing good about not rubbing them BUT i am surprised he didnt offer one. I think he did say that his tear production was low, or the cause could have been from the wind, or so on.

I am frusterated because the "breeder" who my boyfriend got him from lied about how old he was too, we were thinking he was about 4 mos, and the vet re-assured me he was more like 8 mos- 1 year! It doesn't change how i feel about the dog but i sure am mad at this lady, she has yet to send me the shot records too, she is nuts! I am glad he is mine now, and not hers, and can live in a good home, with an owner that takes care of him.

I got both the antropine and trithalmic ointment, it is really hard toget it right into the eye he wiggles like crazy. I cut up one of my boyfriends white t-shirts into pieces so i could gently remove any excess that may be building up, is this right? Or should i just leave it completely alone and not remove the excess? I appreciate everyones feedback SO much, its nice to have a place where you can get a yorkie veteran's best advice.

I just feel so bad for him. Even after the first two doses today, his eyes seem a little better, i hope that is a good sign. Keep us in your prayers :rolleyes:

You need to follow up with your vet or an ophthalmologist. If he has KCS, he will need special drops to stimulate tear production and artificial tears for the rest of his life. The ophthalmologist may recommend surgery to correct the problem because he is so young. That will probably be the only way to preserve his vision long term.

The vet didn't say that it was a deep injury to the cornea, and the nurse said that he should be better in a week. I read online that they would be able to tell you right away how deep it is, and that will show if they need the surgery. Does your dog need the drops all the time now?

If Marley isn't producing enough tears, that is a separate issue from the ulcers, but most likely caused them.

He needs to have a test done to see if he is producing enough tears on his own. If he isn't, he will need drops for the rest of his life or surgery. If you read the link I posted above, it will explain dry eye/KCS.

KCS can be genetic in Yorkies. Did you get a health guarantee?

You can use an eyewash to cleanse his eyes. I like Collyrium:

I called the vet, he said the shrimer (spelling) test came back normal and he is producing enough tears. THATS GOOD!

Hopefully the medication will clear the ulcers up quickly. Make sure you take him back for a recheck. When did they tell you to come back?

I'm so glad you adopted him. Poor Marley must have had those ulcers for awhile since there was so much green infection. They are very painful.

here is info from the opthamologist we went to- she was excellent and it was the best money spent as she really knew her stuff

The actual vet i had signed up for was closed on Sunday, so yeah unfortunately it was Banfield, but it was a lot better than doing nothing yesterday :) I am going to do my check-up with his real vet. They said to do a week. But i am going Friday/Saturday.
