Sick Puppy 5months 1 lb 7 oz Hi I am new to the forum! I have a Yorkie puppy her name is Maddie and she has had a few problems already in life. The vet thinks that acid reflux is causing her to throw up and become hypoglycemic. For the past three months she has been like this, mostly throws up at night when we are sleeping she will wake me up heaving. It used to be she would throw up orange colored stuff until it turned to white clear foamy stuff and could be 8 -12 times in a row until she was done. Now it is maybe once every day to every other day. I am so confused because the two vets that I have taken her to have not really told me anything to do to help her except give her Karo syrup when her gums turn pale. She is 5 months old and only 1 lb 7 oz, I have read on here where most Yorkie owners babies by 5 months are like 5 and 6 pounds. I contacted the breeder and all they can tell me really is if something happens they can give me another one. She is my baby I do not want another one I want her better! She eats good, plays good, and everything just throws up and becomes extremely weak and crys when you touch her. If anyone out there can give me a suggestion I would really appreciate it, I want to save my baby. |
Oh My I Am so sorry this sounds really bad . I would try to see if there is another vet that can help you with your sweet baby. when they are that small it don't take much for them to turn for the worse good luck and Please keep us updated. |
Do you have a vet teaching hospital somewhere near you? That's who finally diagnosed my little Cocoa. I'd keep going to different vets until you have an answer. ~Joanne~ |
oh i'm so sorry maddie keeps throwing up. Since the two vets your went too aren't helping i'd ask one of them to refer you to an internal medicine specialist so they can finally find out what's going on with her. Has she had any blood work done? i don't like to hear such a small dog throwing up so much at once. She can quickly become dehydrated and go downhill fast. make sure you are giving her fluids to rehydrate herself after these vomiting episodes. |
I would get her to another vet preferably an internest. My Cali takes Pepcid every day for tummy problems but she is bigger. Hope you can get a diagnosis and get her better. |
She could have acid stomach, this happens when they go a little too long without food. Try giving her a snack rite at bed time. When you do this , do not give acid reducers or you will not know if it's heart burn or acid stomach. Sometimes with acid stomach you have to do the bed time snack 3 to 5 nights in a row to know for sure. My dog can not go longer then 6 hrs between meals. |
I agree with the last poster. A pup that small has a small tummy, so they need smaller, more frequent meals and absolutely cannot go more than a few hours without food. Does she have kibble available at all times? If not, I would definitely start doing that, and if she's still getting sick get her to an internal medicine specialist very soon. Keep us posted! |
We feed her around ten pieces of food at a time if she still acts hungry we give her a little more. If I am home then I do that several times through out the day, my mother comes over when she gets off of work around 1230 and gets her and takes her to her house to watch Maddie. She leaves food out all day. Have you ever heard of trying an elevated food and water dish to help? One of the vets recommended that, I ordered one it just has not gotten here yet. Thank you so much for your comment |

She leaves food out all day. The only other vet I have within 30 miles is very unreliable:( I am going to google about the teaching centers because I am not too sure. The pet store we have the lady gave me a probiotic to give to her but she just chewed it a couple times and spit it out. Then she also recommended Tripe to give her with her food to add more proteins and enzymes, she goobles that stuff up and has not thrown up for about 3 days now that I have been giving her it. :aimeeyorkWe really appreciate everyone and we will be googling after this message. |
I'm sorry to hear about your little Maddie..I have heard raising the food/water dishes is a good thing..I hope this will help her. As for her size...she is a tiny one!! Have you ever thought about free feeding her? I do...my girls will NOT just stand there and eat when I put it down. The nibble all day. Maybe she isn't eating enough? Is your vet familiar with small breeds? Before I got my 2 I made sure the vet I had (from years ago) was familiar with the yorkie breed. I really do hope they can get this straightened out for you! OH! Welcome to YT!! |
Raising the bowls is a nice thing , but if she has acid stomach that will not help. Acid stomach is caused by too many hrs without food, it's just like when you go too long between meals and your stomach starts growling. The growling is your stomach acid over producing trying to compensate for the lack of food. The only thing you can do to get rid of it is eat.So do like I said in my last post and see if it works, before you spend money on meds. |
i know this is going to sound very strange, but i just went through the same sort of thing, only it was me not a dog. i would wake up in the middle of the night and have dry heaves, something vomit, and lay there with a sick tummy all night, they tried all kinds of antacids and what not, but after awhile it would come back, i finally went to the hospital because i was so sick and not able to go to work, i've had tons of tests done and no body knew what it was, but i took antibiotics and they worked, i don't know if there are doggie antibiotics or not, but i just wonder if it's something like a worm or bacteria making her tummy sick?? let us know what you find out and how she does!! |
She eats good and we feed her several times throughout the day. We scheduled an appointment with a different vet today so hopefully we can get her straightened out. Most of the time it is very late at night when she starts this, we always give her a few pieces of food before bedtime. But I have started to notice her belly makes noises all of the time and she is starting to randomly smack her mouth a lot. Today before work she threw up twice and by the time my mom got here to get here which was like 30 minutes she had three more times, and did a couple more times at her house. It was around an hour of feeding her. I just dont know and am so scarred. Thank you everyone for your input we really appreciate it. |

Hello! Her white blood cell count was high last time at the vet they gave her Amoxicillin for it but I could not tell a difference in her :( I have not seen her pass any worms or blood at all, but her belly constantly makes noise. I am just so worried. Thank you for writing me and I am glad that you feel better!!! |
When she vomits is there food in it or is it just the white foamy stuff? Sometimes if their tummy\'s aren\'t full and they drink water they get nauseous and puke...the white foamy stuff...not actual food. Sure do hope your baby gets well soon...I\'ll add her to my prayers. |
