We had fleas BAD last year and we battled it with two yorkies and a cat. The cat had it the worst because he was allergic to fleas. Anyways, we tried EVERYTHING. We were giving flea baths, we bug bombed the house twice, we used baking soda on the carpets, we vacuumed everything, washed everything, we sprayed them with vinegar and water, tried flea sprays, even flea collars (I know, it was bad, but we had to at least try)... Even natural remedies didn't work. Finally the vet gave us a pill for each of the animals called CapStar. Apparently fleas if ingested (from the animals biting and licking themselves) can turn into tapeworms. Capstar kills everything that may have been ingested within 30 minutes. It does make them itch some during that time, but it's normal and will go away. 30 minutes after we gave the capstar, the vet gave us something called Vectra, which is a gel that we put between the shoulder blade in a line to the rump. That kills everything on the outside and is good for 30 days. We then took the animals out of the house, bug bombed the house again, and steam cleaned EVERYTHING. Flea problem was gone for good. |
Lavender seems to work really well. I buy lavender oil and put in spray bottle and lightly spray their beds about once a month. I only buy doggie shampoo w/lavender in it. I also spray around my front yard because neighbors dogs like my huge lawn:thumbdown and they have lots of fleas. I've never had a flea problem (knock on wood) and none of my 5 yorkies are on any type of treatments. I take them to parks and beach but always bathe them right when I get home. Another thing I do daily is burn lavender oil inside my home and in my backyard. It's relaxing and fleas hate the smell:D Hope this helps - Good Luck!!! |
Be very careful with Tea tree oil as it is toxic if ingested. You can use baking soda in the carpet. Use a few large boxes at once, put it under all furniture and leave it there. After you put in down don't vac for a few days. Use a broom and sweep it into the carpet. I have used this for about 25 yrs now and we never have fleas, it dehydrates the fleas by scratching their thin shell. Use it at least once a week. It will not hurt your pets if they lay on the carpet while it's down and when they lay on it , it gets on them and keeps the fleas off the pets too. |
Fleas can lay dormant for up to 2 years in nooks and crannies. Whenever I have to treat Alfie I do the house also. The house spray I buy is from the pet store. Spray all round the border of each room, carpets wooden floors the lot, lift the cushions on your sofa and spray around the edge of the cushions, lift your mattresses and spray around the edge of the basebefore refitting the mattress. My work involves lifting floors and the dormant fleas wake up and make a meal of me, sometimes it is me that bring them home, cats are the worst for infesting the house. I used to work alongside a pest control man a few years back he taught me all this and it works. Good luck. |
