Mammary Problems

Not an emergency...

We noticed probably sometime around Sunday that Ellie had a bruise below her fifth mammary gland on her left (our right) side. It could've been there for much longer, just not sure. The gland itself is a bit darker than all of them too, with the exception of the 5th on her right side (our left) which is quite dark. We noticed this for the first time yesterday. She has had problems around her glands before (lumps) but they went away after spay and it was just a hormonal issue. Are dark glands ever normal? All of it together has me very concerned. Here are a few pics. You are looking at her midline. Then to the left are her 4th and 5th glands (the 5th is obviously dark) and then to the right are her 4th and 5th and you can barely see the bruise below the 5th. Any ideas?

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. If you are talking about the nipple its self getting dark, that is perfectly normal. That happens often after a heat cycle. Any bruising could have been caused by her bumping into something.

I was thinking that she may have bumped something, but then I read it can be a symptom of mammary cancer and she wasn't spayed until age 6, so we are always watching... Then the nipple, she hasn't had a heat in a couple years, so it just kinda came out of nowhere unless we overlooked it before.

How long ago was she spayed? I remember reading your concerns over the years about having her spayed because of her other health issues. I am glad you were able to have it done and she came through it okay. Just keep a close eye on her. I have only had one female get mammary tumor and it was a hard small pea size, cluster that was easily removed. It is always wise to examine your dogs teats periodically for changes. My concern would be if you started feeling any hard lumps. I hope she continues to do well.

She was spayed in 10/07.
Before that she was getting small, hard lumps around the same nipple where the bruise is now. They went away after spay. I could email these pics to her vet but I'm so tired of always asking her what in the world is going on with this dog. :rolleyes:

I was thinking she had been spayed more recently. Boy, am I out of touch. Anyway, I know how you worry. It sure couldn't hurt to send the pictures to the vet, your vet should know you by now. I know my females get some bruising on their bellies every now and then but I some of mine are very rowdy.
