Don't use steel wool to plug up holes in your walls My Millie has been vomiting and has diarrhea for the past three days. I have taken her to the vet and he suggested she had eaten something that blocked her digestive system. The food she vomited was undigested after five hours. Yesterday she passed steel wool in her stool. She had been eating the steel wool that was embedded in holes in the walls. The exterminator had used them to prevent rodents from entering. I have been worried sick and she seems to be getting better. She no longer wants her solid food, she's a lot less energetic. She now wants wet food so I give it to her. The doctor wanted $500 to admit her for blood tests and xrays. I didn't have it. It could have been a lot worse. Don't use steel wool (or allow your exterminator) to plug holes with steel wool. |
Oh no I am so sorry. I know that is a lot of money, but can they just do an Xray to make sure there is no blockage and maybe a blood test to make sure the steel wool didn't damage anything/ That may cost a couple hundred but at least you would know she is ok. Do you know how much she ate? I would think her whole digestive track would be hurt from the rough steel wool. It is amazing what they will eat. I hope she is ok and that you can get her checked out a little further. Some vets let you make payments or there is a credit card for pet emergencies called Care Credit. Please keep us posted. |

Been here. I found Marcel (when he was about 1.5 yrs) w/ a steel wool pad once - and he had clearly gotten a bit of it. He immed. went into having mushy, grainy, weird poo. Went to the vet, and she recommended we wait and watch. Well, it took a good 3wks-1mth for his stool to return to normal, but it truly did. Of course, he only ingested a small bit of the steel wool sponge, for whatever that's worth. |
Unbelievable Thanks for sharing. I thought my Millie was weird. I can't imagine what the appeal could be in eating steel wool. I don't think she got a lot, just a little over a period of time that built up. If she does not get better or shows signs of gastro intes. foreign body (the vet gave me the signs) I'm going to get her in for xrays. Thanks again |
All better Millie is 100% better and back to her old self. Thanks to all those who gave advice. |
Just make sure its covered or away from dogs reach. We have a small hole behind our stove that is plugged with steel wool because we had a few mice during the winter come in to keep warm. They hate steel wool because its scratches their skin. |
