Liver shunt Two questions: After the LS surgery, I was instructed to take my litttle orkie off of the Metronidazole after a month. I am watching her closely. I am learning that some Yorkies are on Lactulose after surgery but I do not know if this is temporary as my Yorkie's was. If your baby has had the LS surgery, how long after surgery were the meds comntinued? Also, if the breeders dogs do not test positive for Bile Acid----can they continue to breed? I was told that the LS my baby had was congenital---there is a faulty gene somewhere which I would think would tell the breeder not to breed either of the parents again even if the Bile Acid test for the parents were OK. Any comments? |
All the pups I know continue with the Lactulose (forever) |
The parents of a pup with LS should not be bred anymore. It can go back 10 generations and a bile acids test would only show if the parents had the disease. It wouldn't show anything about the parents being carriers. |
My Lola had LS surgery on March 6 and I was instructed per Dr. Tobias to keep her on the lactulose until her Bile Acids returned to normal levels. If they do not return to normal levels, I believe she will stay on the lactulose forever. |
