FHO surgery My 6 month old male yorkie was diagnosed with hip/dysplsia and they have recommended he have a femoral head osteotomy. I was wondering if there is anyone that has gone through this or knows anyone that has. I am just curious about the outcome of the surgery. Thanks. |
Hi! One of my girls went through this when she was 7 months old. The surgery went fine and she did great and she was very small. Now, almost 2 years later, she can walk on it just fine but when she wants to run, she keeps that leg up. It doesn't seem like she is in pain at all, just able to run faster holding it up. If you do a search here on YT, you will find other whose dogs have been through the surgery, too.:) |
Thanks so much for the info. Yes my dog is also very small (2lbs.) Thats why I am a little scared about the surgery. Did you use a regular vet or a board certified surgeon? What was actually wrong with her hip? Did they replace the socket with anything or just take it completely out? |
I'm so sorry to hear about your baby but at least it's all fixable. I don't have any personal experience with fho surgeries but we have had 3 lp surgeries here. There is no doubt in my mind I would choose a board certified surgeon over a regular vet. A regular vet receives basic surgery training while a board certified surgeon has taken a minimum of 2 more years of additional training. Good Luck to you and your baby. |
My little guy Tiki (4lbs) had both of his hips done....6 months apart. He healed fast and is able to run just as fast as my other yorkie! He can jump up and climb on stairs. The only thing he can't do is balance on his back legs very well. But he is in NO pain:). |
