stewie is so sick one minute he's playing and fine , i gave him some cut up tbone steak with his food, no bone just steak, and about an hour later he was throwing up over and over again, diareheia, lifeless just laying there , can anyone give me any idea what it might be, LuLu my maltese seems fine |
Idk... poor baby... I would give him nurti cal for sure. And get him to the vet asap. prayers sent your way.. |
Oh no! You really need to take him to an emergency vet. I'm no expert in any way, shape or form, but I'm concerned by your "lifeless" description. I'm wondering about pancreatitis. Maybe?? |
How old is he? Is it always after he eats? Is this new ...how long has he been doing it? I would bring him to the vet.... one of my dogs had pancreatitis and this was what he looked like...another of my dogs has MVD a liver issue and if he ate high protein like steak he would become very sick.... |

It sounds very much like pancreatitis. He needs to see the vet right now. He will probably need an IV. Pancreatitis is life threatening but it can usually be treated. This is an emergency. |
he's 6 months old and this is the first time he has ever been sick, i was thinking maybe it was the steak , lulu seems fine and they both ate it, Stewie vomitted big piles then alot of flem, and some dihereia , then i curled up on the couch with him and wraped him upi n a fur blanket, he is lying quietly, when i got up to get something in the kitchen when i got back he was up on the arm of the couch watching for me, i curled him back up in the blanket and hes sleeping, he hasnt thrown up now for over an hour, and when he hears something he holds his head up and looks around, then puts it back down and rests. I had my son watch him and ran to the pet store to buy nutri cal but they didnt sell it so went to the vets but it was closed. |
and he also head some of the steak last night and was fine last night and all morning, both puppies are up to date with all shots, LuLu got her 16 week shot last week |
I just took him some cold bottled water and he drank it , also looked at what time i posted this message and its been nearly 4 hours since he was sick. |
stewie is now running around acting like his ussual self, i will keep a close eye on him and keep him quiet, he went over to the food but just looked and walked away, should i put a little sugar in the water or anything |
Glad he is better. I cannot give my dogs people food or they get real sick. Sounds like Stewie better stick to dog food. |
It'll be the tbone steak , too rich, my baby can't handle it either same out come vomiting etc and lots of lethargic sleep, if I do feed it I only give a small amount with his normal food |
My vet said never never give a yorkie steak/this is after I went thru a bout with pancreatitis, we almost lost our sammy. Whew, I never want to go thru that again. so, my pups get no steak or human food which is rich. So sorry to hear that your pup is sick, hope he gets well soon. |
no more steak for either one of them, he seems fine now, running , playing , barking, not eating yet but after all the throwing up hes probably to nerves too, i swear there must have been easily over 4 cups of stomach content. He probably dropped a pound and it was only probably an ounce of steak , just a small amount cut up in tiny pieces |
It only takes one bite of the wrong food to cause pancreatitis. Yorkies are very sensitive to grains , greases and other hard to digest foods. Be very careful what you feed him, I would stick to dog food and fruits and veggies. |
Glad to hear that Stewie is doing better. I never give Abby anything but dog food. With my last 2 yorkies, my uncle would sneak them a little "people" food and they got sick and would throw up so I said, NO MORE PEOPLE FOOD!!!! I didn't want them to go through that again. That's just my experience. Others yorkies may do fine with people food. |
what about yogurt, i read that was good, I will stay away from steak but should i stay away from chicken too, what about raw marrow bones from the grocery store are they a no too, and liver i have given them that before , always in small portions but should i not give liver too, i feed them royal canin but they never get to excited about there dog food. |
Yogurt is fine chicken, liver fine as long as you don't cook them in grease. Things like peeled apple, peas, carrots(not the ones that look like baby carrots) they are full of chlorine, broccoli , cauliflower, green beans all ok. Stay away from greasy anything. You can give digestive enzymes with food, also canned pumpkin they love it and it's healthy for them. Not sure what the marrow bones are so can't answer that one. |
yeah i have been peeling carrots i read about the baby carrots in chlorine to keep them orange, what about cheese slices , just like a quarter of a cheese slice? or cheddar cheese |
Small amts of cheese are ok if you need to hide a pill in it, but not on a regular basis, Cheese is greasy and fattening, that's the kind of thing you want to avoid. |

for small dogs only organic meats bone marrow concerns me as we went to two board certified dentist and they said dogs can break their teeth on those things :( also a client of mine's dog burried one then dug it up and many owners let their dogs do this and chewed on it and got a horrible bacteria infection so be careful and wash it when done and let air dry if you want to do this but i personally wouldn't bc if they are heavy chewers they could break a tooth |
Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs here is some info on pancreatitis sounds like you dodged a bullet :) i have 3 dogs and all ate the same things and only dex got real sick. Next time they do blood make sure they do triglycerides on that panel on a 12 hr fast as i always do blood work on 12 fast just like they do in humans - if the triglycerides are high like my dex the dog is more prone to pancreatitis as the blood already has a high amount of fat content naturally so just takes a little to put them over the edge. Pancreatitis is very expensive to treat and 50% or more of dogs die from it and yorkies are very prone to this so stay very low fat as you had a warning sign with this so it will be very easy for your dog to get this. I would also just to be safe get pre and post bile acid test on him as it is also a sign of an issue with the liver as well as a high protein meal can make them sick and so i would want to rule out liver disease since yorkies are 38 more times likely to have liver disease so you need to rule this out before any medications in future. It is an easy test and our vet bile acids all yorkies and maltese prior to any meds since it is so common in the breeds |
Good job ! Good Job Debbie, I Totally agree. Has she been back to get all this info? I hope she gets all of it. I was gearing towards pancreatitis , didn't think about liver shunt. I hope that's not what it is. |
Ok sister where is the up date? We are all waiting to hear if your baby is ok. Keeping our fingures crossed for you . |
