Help! =[ Okay, I recently got a boy yorkie, I've had him for a few weeks now. I haven't taken him to the vet yet. The yorkie was abandoned before I got him, so I'm not sure of his history. I took him to the groomers for the first time today. Since he's been home, he's been acting strange. He hasn't really barked, and hasn't gotten excited like he usually does. And he licks his privacy areas like CRAZY. NON STOP since he's been home pretty much. His body feels really warm- and sometimes he'll shake. he's just not acting the same. He curls up in a little ball and just lays there. It really worries me. He doesn't even move when I get out of bed now. He acts like he doesn't even want to walk really, and he doesn't want to play or anyhing- it's not normal. I'm not sure what to do- maybe it scared him? What should I do?:confused::confused: |
Hmm maybe the groomer express his glands, but I will take your little one to the vet, just to be safe. Hugs:animal-pa |
Please just watch him and take him to your vet. You can feel at times if something is not right. |

Do you think its anything I need to be like upset about? |

I haven't taken him to the vet before, I'm so scared something might have happened. I wish I knew what was wrong, maybe I'm over exaggerating... but he won't stop licking himself. He acts like he wants to be left alone, but he never wants to be alone. |
Another thing it could be is just the bareness.. kind of like when a boy gets his head shaved and then continually rubs his had on his head because he likes the way it feels... I don't know. I would watch him and if in doubt, take him to the vet. Or why not call the groomer and ask if she/he did express the anal gland |

ps. tomorrow call the groomer and ask her,if anything rare happens etc:confused: |

Call first thing in the morning and get that little boy in for a check up and get some shots started. If you have no record of puppy shots, you will have to start from scratch. Let the vet know about your concerns since the grooming appointment. It may just be that he is very tired from the experience and he may be licking more because of nervousness, encountering a female at the groomers, or even because they cut hair there and it feels different to him. It could even be that they shaved too close and he has a sore spot. But the vet checkup and shots are of more importance right now. Get thee to a vet! |

I know it's important. But I haven't taken him because he's acted perfectly fine up until now except eating habits. But today.. I just don't know. :( I'm going to call a vet tomorrow I suppose. I'm 16, the dog is my responsibility, and I don't know everything about them. |
First let me welcome you to Yorkie Talk.:) Please take your little guy to the vet for a heath check up and any shots he may need. Please check back and let us know how he is doing. Please don't be afraid to ask questions. Even the most experienced people don't know everything. That's why this site is so great. There is usually always someone that can answer your questions. You will find a lot of very caring, supportive and knowledgeable people here. |
Hair cut He should go to the vet as soon as possible. Some times if a dog has never had a hair cut it feels strange to them, and sometimes they just get embarrassed about it. When ever you pick him up from the groomer try telling him how handsome he looks and how much you love his new hair cut. But he should see the vet to make sure this is the problem. |
He's like licking all over, it's really weird. and I'll look at him and then he'll stare at me.. then he'll like hide his face, and go back to likeing and kinda biting his leg, then he was licking his foot. He keeps looking at me weird though. And he's still licking his privacy areas like crazy! This has been going on all night. I was thinking it might be itching? but I don't know. and he keeps sniffing himself and things. then he'll hide his nose. Once he's still, he'll smack,or lick just like he's trying to get my saliva in his mouth or something? Idk.. I'm so worried- it's so unusual. Tomorrows sunday- I doubt a vet will be open. |
He could be itching because when they groom your dog they bath them then trim them. When you go get a hair cut , the first thing you want to do is take a shower to wash off all the itchy cut hair that sticks to your skin. Dogs often feel the same way. Also some times they spray them with dog perfume and some dogs don't like it and some are allergic to it. Try bathing him to get rid of the smell and the loose itchy hair and see how he acts then. |
You mentioned his eating habits. What about them. Is he not eating right now? I don't know but maybe giving him a bath again might help. Maybe to wash away whatever the groomer put on him? That is probably what I would try and do. But yup, the pup has to go to the vet hun. How old is the pup? |

I haven't been on all day today, but since it was Sunday, you probably did not get to the vet. So, just ask your folks to make an appointment when they open tomorrow. Let them know how important it is to the safety of your pup. I would not worry too much about all that licking. It is probably just from the haircut and the grooming products they used on him that he is probably not used to. It could even be that they did not rinse him well enough. I would probably try giving him a thorough rinsing with luke warm water. See if that helps. Good luck! |
Just a few words.. I'm 16. I handle all my dogs expenses, including vet trips, vaccinations, and blood tests. I do pet sitting, which is where I get my money from. My parents give me an allowance which is used for going out to places, but the money I spend on my dog is solely from pet sitting. I've paid $250 for his adoption fee, $350 for his neutering, $50 for heartworm test, $100 for all his vaccinations/checkup, and another $100 for heartgard and flea meds (not to mention the hundreds I've spent on toys, treats, crate, etc). Just because I'm 16 doesn't mean I don't take responsibility for my dog. I decided I wanted him, so I have to make sure he gets what he needs (even if it means saving money in other areas). I believe the same goes for you. You got the dog, you need to take him to the vet. There is no excuse. I'm sure you can find a 24/7 clinic. There are plenty in my area. I researched dogs for 4 years before I got Scruffs. I had one before that, but he grew up with me and I still knew nothing about dogs. I had to research the necessary vaccinations, healthy foods and treats, toys, and other supplies they need. I researched what breed would be good for me. By getting a dog I knew it was going to be a BIG responsibility with a lot of sacrifices, but I knew that's what I wanted to do. I think you need to consider if you are ready for a dog, and if you are, then getting the dog to the vet is the first step. Once you do that, you need to research as much as you can on dogs. Their food, how to train them, socializing (I'm not sure how old your pup is), etc. I know I might have been a bit harsh here but I did HOURS and HOURS of writing essays to my parents, explaining everything I was going to get for him, house sitting/dog sitting for people, etc in order to get my dog. It frustrates me that other kids can just go out and easily get a dog without doing the proper and necessary research. I apologize for being so harsh. Oh, and if you need any help I'd gladly be able to tell you what I've found to be the best food, treats, training methods, exercising, etc. Let me know. |
Did he get nicked? My Scottie got nicked at the groomer once and he came home non stop licking, when I looked he had a small cut. |
Sometimes my dog itches like crazy when he comes from the groomer. They put some type of doggy perfume on him that drives him crazy. The itching usually wears off by the next day though. I'm surprised the groomer took him without any shot records. I have to provide shot records from my vet to my groomer before they will touch him. |

I am very impressed by your maturity. Some adults don't even take the time to learn and do the research you did. Your baby sure is lucky. I hope the OP will take your advise. And maybe since you are the same age, she will except your knowledge, as a mentor of sorts. |
HMMMM, no update yet. I hope he's ok now. |
If he is itching all over, maybe he's having some sort of reaction to what ever they used on him. As everyone else has said here...I would bring him to your vet. I hope the little guy is feeling better soon. |

I agree!! Very bright girl you are!! And a very good post =) |
I know you're worried about taking him to the vet, but it's better to be safe then sorry. |
It is unusual that a groomer would even groom a dog without it's shot records. All of the groomers that I have used request proof that the dog is current on all vaccinations before they will groom the dog. |
hello pls let us know how is your fur baby doing .hope you took him to the vet :aimeeyork |
