Fire Ants in Ontario warning I was walking my Yorkie Mya and her daughter (62 oz/6 1/2 month old) Cupcake along the bicycle path that sides on Etobicoke Creek. I have walked dogs on this same route for 10 years. Mya likes the pavement, little Cupcake likes to walk on the grass. On Sunday Cupcake let out a scream and fell on her side. She biting her paw so I thought she stepped in glass. She was covered in fire ants and then I was frantically trying to get them off her, so were my hands were getting covered by them, it happened that fast. I heard a sprinkler near by and ran to it, the woman said her dog was attacked as well. Cupcake could not walk her eye was closed. I brought her home bathed her twice with tearless shampoo and let her soak, I rinsed her eye out with natural tears a few times. Her foot leg, tummy, eyelid and tongue/mouth had been stung. I had 14 bites on my hands and wrists as well as my forehead and face and neck. I will call the City of Brampton to see what can be done if anything. I just wanted to let others know that fire ants are nasty like hornets and sting and attack. Cupcake must of stepped on the nest with right front paw. I hate to think what would of happened had the sprinkler not been near by. She was fine by Tuesday. |
I bet that was scary. I am glad she is okay. I hate fire ants. Here in Texas they are everywhere. Sometimes they even try to invade the house. I did not know there were in Canada too. |
How scary! Multiple fire ant stings can kill a small dog. Cupcake was so lucky! They are really bad here in North Carolina. You have to be really careful not to disturb their nests. It makes walking on the grass very hard. |
Oh that is so frightening! It's a good reminder to all of us to watch out during these summer months. I'm so glad your baby didn't have an allergic reaction that would have caused trouble breathing! I am very allergic to fire ants and 14 bites on me would have been very dangerous- I will continue to keep an eye out to keep both my baby and myself safe. I hope you little one is feeling better soon! |
Poor little baby!!!! You guys were out for a nice little stroll and you get hit with THAT!!! How HORRIBLE! I'm glad everything is ok now. Hugs :) |
OMGoodness!!! That must have been so scary for you and sweet little Cupcake. I'm so glad you both are doing better. :) My Bella loves to walk in grass too. After hearing your story I will be sure to be extra vigilant when I walk her. |
Glad you were able to take such quick action! That had to be frightening! We have fire ants bad down here too. I seem to just move them around the yard instead of getting rid of them. That is one of the biggest reasons I can't let the dogs out alone even though we have a nice acre fenced for them. Between fire ants, cow killer ants, spiders, snakes and hawks, it is just way too dangerous outside for these little babies! Put a little Campho-phenique on thos fire ant bites. Takes the sting away and helps with the itch that comes after. |
