It is also important to note that many pups diagnosed with pancreatitis actually have an intenstinal issue that manifests in pancreatitis episodes. If she has repeated issues, you will need to look further. a Spec cPL is imperative to properly diagnose pancreatitis, you can't just go by amylase and lipase levels.

Dogs with pancreatitis should definitely be using digestive enzymes and getting smaller meals more frequently. A probiotic is also essential. Nikki may not be eating beacuse the food isn't appealing to her. Tike Dog is a canned food out there (may be hard to find) that has great ingredients and is very low fat. A fish based diet is generally recommended for pancreatic dogs as it digests easier than other meat sources.

Chicken products should be avoided to ensure they aren't getting hormone injected food. A consult with a nutritionist is probably a really good idea. White potato can be very difficult on the digestive system as well.

What I found was exactly the same, small amounts of a bland food many times a day and gradually increase the amount. I see you are keeping in touch with the vet so that is good. I wanted to update everyone on our progress. Nikki is now eating on her own and little by little is gaining some weight back. She is on some holistic drops for pancreas support and it does seem to help. Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions and kind thoughts. Nikki is a long way from being back to normal, but we are on a mission to get her there.

I'm sorry to read this. My Yorkie had pancreatitis. It was caused by steroid injections by her awful vet. He never marked her chart that she had sensitivity to steroids.
I hope Nikki will recover fully. She is in my prayers for sure.

Nikki is much better today with endurance. We had a vet appointment and went for an ultra sound. Everything was fine. She is eating a little better and is much more alert, wanting to be involved. Nikki barked for the first time in 3 weeks today - that was a very nice surprise. She and her brother police the neighborhood from our deck. I am more hopeful, but still concerned. She is gaining weight back very slowly.

I feel bad for all the little puppies, dogs, cats......(and those who love them) that have ever experienced pancreatitis. It is wicked.

I wanted to update everyone on Nikki's condition. It has been two months since she was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Her weight went from 6 pounds down to 3.73 pounds in a very short period of time. After her initial stay at the hospital on IV's, we continued with trips to the clinic for subcutaneous hydration, pain meds, antibiotics, anti-emetics and at home continuous syringe feedings and water. My husband was home due to a lay off and would spent every day syringe feeding her every two to three hours but she did not gain any weight above 3.7 pounds.

Out of frustration and desperation, I began checking on holistic possibilities. I found a knowledgeable person and went for it. The Vet and I discussed it and she felt it was worth a try as we were losing ground fast.

She is now at 5.25 pounds, is picking on her brother continuously, has her "attitude" back, and eats alot without any encouragement. I am so thankful. Nikki and her brother Joey are doing great - back to playing hide and seek and their favorite, "ambush"! And, my husband is now back working!
