warning of new parvo strain I have been reciving all sorts of emails about this new parvo strain and should of been passing it along here on YT I know of 4 breeders who are clean ethical breeder who have lost there babies two this new stain here is one email with info One of our Sister Rescues, Critter Crossings has had a terrible outbreak of a particularly resistant strain of Parvo. In the last week it has killed 8 of her dogs and others are still fighting the virus. I not sure where the infected dog came from, but, she does get a lot of her dogs from SoCal and Tehama. This virus is even affecting dogs that have been current on their vaccinations for years. Please, friends, be careful of the dogs you take in. This strain of Parvo is very nasty. We've had this strain as well. It is so important to keep puppies segregated from all other dogs. Our outbreak was contained to our puppy pen and while we did lose almost an entire litter, no other dogs were affected. That pen has been sterilized multiple times and we have had no more outbreaks We now use Galaxy DA2PP rather than Fort Dodge as Fort Dodge, we've learned, doesn't protect against this new strain From what I understand, the dogs that have died have been puppies and that the older dog in her home was given antibiotics and fluids as a precaution. Are there more dogs affected than those? |
Thank you so much for posting about this! I am so sorry for your loss . How devastating. I thought your babies were exposed at the vet office? Regardless of how they were exposed this is a very serious matter. I have a 8 week old pup who has only had her first round of vaccines. I also have my 15month old Yorkie. Suzi has had all her vaccines. However, I am scared to take her outside on walks right now, because I fear that she could bring home the Parvo virus to our new baby. Is it better just to keep Suzi indoors as well? Just until the new puppy has had all her vaccines and wait until after 2 weeks ? I understand that people can bring home the Parvo virus on their clothes, or shoes . We take our shoes off inside all the time, but have to be careful where we leave them. Both dogs love to chew on our shoes. |
I believe they discovered this new strain in 2006/7 and this might help. Sad that more vets don't know about this. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...168-parvo.html |

I believe this is the strain that our vet warned us about. He said that it is the worst yet, and most die the 1-3 day of showing signs. That it is practically impossible to save them. Most are a result of heart failure, that it goes full force after the heart and they stroke out. The only vaccines that he warned about was Vanguard, and any that you can pick up at your local feed/pet supply stores, such as Spectra. I told him that we use Duramune and he said it was one of the best. But after looking at my package they are made by Fort Dodge, so I am unsure now......Who makes Galaxy and are they better? |
I just checked my vet bills. Our puppies were all given the DA2PP. Very sad some vets are not keeping current! Condolences to any who lost puppies to this horrible Parvo. We had a pound puppy come down with Parvo a few days after we got him. Took a lot of money, even transfusions from a boxer, but he made it. Most expensive pet we ever had. But he was worth it. |
