My poor puppy, please read Bailey seemed really great yesterday, his poop was fairly normal, and he was playing, eating the reg puppy stuff. This morning his poop is really runny and bloody, I am shaking I am so upset. I gave him worm medication on the 17th, but I have started him on the coccidia meds again. I am really worried to death and literally feel sick. I just tried the vet and of course got an answering machine, I left a message, I hope she calls back soon, I am frightened I will lose my little Bailey. |
Oh no I am so sorry he is still not well. Hopefully you can get him into the vet this morning. He needs to be seen and more tests run and maybe needs to be hydrated. Good luck and keep us posted. |
Make sure you keep him hydrated until you see the vet. Pedialyte and nutrical is good to keep on hand with these small guys. Where about in Canada are you? Maybe we have another member from there that can give you a recommend on a better vet? Maybe there is another one closer than 8 hours away? Hope the vet calls you back soon. |

What did the vet rule out? He is just too small and too sick to wait. I understand the next nearest vet is 8 hours away but I know sometimes this vet isn't much help, so you may need to pack up and take a long drive unless your vet can give you answers right now. :( |
I'm in Labrador Canada, The vet didn't rule out coccidia, she said that it still might be present and told me to continue with them anyway along with the worm medication. I skipped the coccidia pill yesterday, I was going to stop giving it to him since it never showed up in his poop, but she said there was still a possibility. He ate twice this morning already and drank plenty of water, now he is bouncing around playing like a crazy puppy, I just don't understand it, he doesn't appear sick at all, but I know he must be. I am dreading his next poop. |
Since he is still exhibiting coccidea symptoms, I'd resume the antiboitic. I'd suggest a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help his inflamed intestinal tract. Give him nothing else...no treats, no bully sticks, etc. If there is a great deal of blood in his feces...and it is coccidea it means it is more advanced than earlier stages. Perhaps you can find another vet's office here.... Newfoundland & Labrador Veterinary Medical Association |
Like the others here, I'm concerned about your pup too. Ongoing diarrhea can just be so dangerous - and I know you already know this. I know Giardia was ostensibly "ruled out", but giardia is notorious for hiding under the scope and it takes a lot of skill and sometimes multiple fecals to definitively diagnose it. I still think giardia is a possibility. Are you giving flagyl or Metro? Bc puppies can act fine, but actually be close to decompensating....you can't always go by the fact that they're playing/eating/etc...so just be careful w/ relying on those signs heavily. Like Crystal said, I too may be at the point of driving the 8 hrs to see another vet. I wish your vet was more responsive bc this must be so scary for you. :( |
Oh no poor Bailey. Can you phone another vet, even if the vet is so far away? Can you look up the vets home phone number, this is crazy to have only 1 vet close by! He is so tiny. I am sorry I don't mean to scare you but I had a 10 wk old shihtzu, he was 2 lbs go from playing and acting perfectly normal to waking up to him in the morning passed away!! These babies can go so quickly. |
Omg, That is awful:( I left a message for the vet and they tell you they will return your call in 24 hrs! I have no way of getting to the other vet on such short notice, it's a gravel road too, not even paved. I know it's hard for people who live in larger centers to understand that. Yes, the vet here sucks. I just left another message. Bailey hasn't pooped since this morning. The vet also said it might to stress related colitis..he was fine wednesday and Thurday, no runny poop, just slightly softer then normal, I could even pick it up with a tissue in one piece to dispose of it. |
The vet was in surgery, but I spoke to the aid there and told her the situation, I took Bailey down and waited for the vet to finish the surgery, and she did look at Bailey, I described what happened, he was weighed again and he gained 2 ounces since Tuesday. He is now 1.1lbs..I have to bring in another poop sample tomorrow if Bailey has another bad poop like this morning, he hasn't done anything since, I am just waiting to see how it is and hoping it isn't bad like this mornings was. |
I would continue giving Bailey the pills . ANd keep calling the vet. Don't take NO for an answer, and insist that your puppy be seen . |

Yes she did see her. I have to continue the medication. |
Good for you, Darlene...for not letting that vet and her miserable answering machine continue to put you off. Sounds like you're pretty much stuck with her. An 8 hour drive doesn't pack it in an emergency, that's for sure. |

Ooops, Also wanted to add, Bailey had his second poop today and it was well formed and I couldn't see any blood, I may have aggravated his system with to much dairy as well. I hope he doesn't have a bad poop ever again, I am saying a prayer. |
So sorry little Bailey is sick. It can be so scary when our little ones aren't feeling well and what makes it even harder is your vet situation. Your doing a great job taking care of Bailey. I remember when Jake (my first yorkie) had blood in his stool after I had him for only a week. I felt sick to my stomach and couldn't stop crying but I had him treated and he was fine.It took me a few days to recover be he bounced right back. Bailey might be small but he is a tough little guy.:D |

Baxter had a similiar problem when he was little. Even though he ate very well (his nick name was hoover lol). Everytime he pooped it just squirted out of him. And he still gained weight. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with him, so we started our own routine. First was to change his food, from what the vet had him on. Then it was removing chew sticks etc. Anything that had artificial flavoring, smoke flavor etc on it. Well he is on Merriks turduckin, and get hymilian dog chews, carrots and natural stuff. And it seemed to cure him. He hasn't had the problem in over a year. I hope poor Bailey can get his problem fixed. He is such a little guy. And I know how you are feeling. I almosted hated taking Bax out to poop, because I knew how bad he felt. Bailey is a tough little one, if he is still eating, playing and gaining. Hoping the best for him |
Thank you all for your posts, I appreciate it so much! |
So glad to hear Bailey is feeling better....i hope he continues to do so...:) |

My little Cindi Lu Lu had coccidea. She is liquid medicine for 14 days she only has a few days left. Within 24 hours the diarrhea stopped and she was doing much better. Good Luck to your lil' baby.:) |
I would try to get your vets or a techs home number since you live that far way. Just a suggestion. Please keep us updated on Bailey... |
Great news Darlene hang in there. Some piece of mind for you even here in NYC we have the same problems, anwsering machienes, indifference, lack of communication. You baby is going to be fine. Just remember if you go the broiled chicken and rice route, cut the chicken so its almost like sawdust and keep in mind that the rice will bind the Pup so may not poop for a while. Hang in there!!! |
Glad to hear she is doing better. Cindi Lu has a few more days left on her meds.:D |
Thanlk you Everyone! Baileys poops so far today have been good! I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that he won't have any more bloody poop. I'm going to continue the cociddia meds, and pray this is the end of it! He gets his second set of shots on the 25th, I will have him weighed again, and see how much he gained! |
