Trixie is sick and we don't know what's wrong My Trixie has been sick since last Friday. She is very listless and will just lay in her bed in the same position just looking around once in a while just with her eyes. I took her to the vet on Monday and he gave her 2 pockets of fluids under her skin on her back (like bubbles) an x-ray of her belly and a shot of antibiotics. She had a 105 fever and still has a fever now. Her white blood count was high so we know she has an infection but we don't know where. The vet sent me to a specialist and they did an ultrasound of her abdomin and everything looks fine. Her blood work showed a slight elevation of her pancreas but not enough for the vet to call it pancreatitis. I just can't get anything into her. Yesterday she ate about 1/2 jar of babyfood. The doctor gave me new antibiotics and 3 cans of prescription dog food he said she would definatly eat...not!!! I can't get her medicine into her. I think she will have to go in again today maybe for more fluid pockets, and a shot of antibiotics. She is only 9mo old and weighs 10.6. She lost 1/2 pound since Monday. I am very concerned and so is the vet. He is confering with the specialist as to the next coarse of action. In the mean time my poor baby is having all of these tests and it is costing me a fortune. I feel so bad for her. My daughter slept with her last night holding her paw. I don't know what is wrong.:( |
How scary not to know. Any chance of Lymes? I hope you get answer's soon so you know what course of action to take. Sending Trixie our best, |
They checcked for lymes. and rockey mountain spotted fever. They did all of the tick illnesses. thank you for your concern |
Who is your Vet  |
Boil lean chicken breast in alittle water. Once cooked, take chicken out and strain the water, saving the chicken broth. Cook rice, and shred the chicken to mix with the rice, poor 1 teaspoon of chicken broth into the mixture, heat for about 10 seconds and serve. She should think it is yummy :) |
Reese was very ill last this last December. The antibiotics can cause them to be anorexic. They can give you something to increase her appetite. I'd also ask about reducing her fever...that's the cause of her lethargy and can also be another reason she won't eat. Reese received three iv of fluids in one week...he also lost a pound in 4 days. We never received an actual diagnosis...because they simply could not figure out what was wrong with him. At the end of a week...he was given a barium x ray...which found nothing...but apparently eradicated whatever bug he had. The latter the vet concurred... Sending prayers for her. I completely understand how scarey it is. |
I had grilled chicken strips in the freezer and I cooked them she won't touch it. My other two are going crazy because they want to eat it it smells so good. The only thing she would eat was yeaterday the vegetable chicken baby food but now she won't touch it. Yesterday all she had was that 1/2 jar and nothing today at all. She has been lapping up a teenie bit of water from a spoon. Should I try pedialite I feel if she is only taking a few laps of it I might as well give her something with electrolites in it. I'm at a loss. How can I raise 4 children 19,18,14,10 and I can't figure out what is wrong with my baby girlie. I use Sachem animal hospital then yesterday I went to Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip. My doctor is confering with the internist there. |
Since it's been 3 days since she received the fluids...with that high a fever...it's likely she's dehydrated and needs more. Reese got these almost every other day for a week and I was desperately trying to keep him hydrated by forcing fluids via a syringe. Touch her gums...do they feel tacky? Lift her skin and release...does it go back immediately or is it slower. I really urge you to take her back in for another round...dehydration does not take long and it can be fatal in itself. Btw, I offered ALL the good stuff...he wouldn't touch it and I mean foods he would gobble in 2 secs if he wasn't sick. |

Yes force Pedialite. You can also force Children's Vanilla Pedisure. Do you have a syringe to use  I like that place in West Islip :) |
Thanks for the advice. I thought I lost her the other night. She was laying there and I picked her up to take her outside and her little head just kind of flopped over and she peed all over me. I thought she was gone. Her gums were white as snow I immediatly gave her nutrical and some sips of water. She looked better and was alert. Still she is not the same Trix. She wanted to go on the couch about 9:30 this morning and she is still there in the same position. My 18 yr old came in the kitchen for breakfast and the babies normally crowd around her because she will give them a few pieces of cereal ...well the 2 nuts were there but Trixie didn't budge she didn't even pick up her head. I am going to call the vet right now. |

O my this doesn't sound good. I hope they find out what wrong . How old is she? To bad you don't know how to put fliuds under skin. thats what i did for my old prissy. My vet showed me how to do it. It's real easy. We well pray for her |
I just tried to give her some water..she took some of it. Then I tried the food again. I put a little peanut butter in it....no she just hid her head. Well my 14 yr old who held her hand and slept with her came up and tried to give her some food .....don't you know that little rat ate some from my daughter. She put a little water in it so she was just kind of lapping it a little. But she feels awfully warm to me. She did urinate this morning but hasn't pooped since Monday night. |
Oh no, it's so hard when you don't know what is wrong. Hugs and prayers being sent your way. I hope you are able to figure out what is going on soon. |
I'm so sorry she's sick. I'll keep her in my prayers hoping for a quick recovery! |

I'm so sorry. It sounds Kinda like London's. She hides her head when i try to give her food but i force the pedialyte into her with a syringe every 3 hrs, i check her gums every couple minutes and the pedialyte is fruit flavored so i think the sugar helps with that. I also bought organic chicken broth, low sodium and she licked some of that, so maybe try feeding her some of that and if she doesnt take it, do it with a syringe. I feel so terrible. It is really hard not knowing. I guess the most important thing right now while trying to figure it out is keep her hydrated and sugar levels up. London also has not pooped but maybe it's cause they won't eat:confused: That is what i am guessing:( |
I took Trixie, on the advice of my vet, to the hospital and finally found out what is wrong...She had pancreatitis... Poor baby I just left her there and she has to stay there for a couple of days. She will get rehydrated and get antibiotics through an iv. I can't stand it I miss her. Coco and Pebbles are looking all over for her. I want her home. She has eatten a total of 1 jar of baby food in 48 hrs. I was only able to get her to drink a few laps of pedialite. I'm so glad we found out what was wrong with her. The doctor said she has to eat a special low fat diet when she gets home. That's fine I will do anything to get her better. I don't want to see her like this any more. She is only 9mo old. She is supposed to be running crazy and playing. Does anyone know what kind of food she should eat? I will ask the vet at the hospital but I was just wondering if I have to buy it from the vet or do they sell it in the store. Right they only eat holistic kibble. I don't know where she may have gotten this. They do not eat table food at all. Maybe her treats...I don't know. |
What food were you giving them before? i dont know what kind of food you can give her....but sending hugs for you and she will be okay...as long as they are keeping her hydrated..thats important. i know you miss her very much |
Poor thing I hope you find a food solution soon the vet may give you prescription food. My last dog liked the prescription food at room temp. So when I opened a can and put the rest in the fridge I had to warm it a bit in the microwave before feeding it to her again. She hated it cold! Just touch it with your finger to be sure it's not to hot before feeding her if she's the same as my dog was about cold canned food. |

Pancreatitis mainly affects older dogs, but puppies can get it after one high fat treat is given. I've read threads about people going visiting and a relative gave the puppy a human food treat, and the puppy got an attack of pancreatitis. You want to make sure no one is giving your dog any human processed foods. Lunchmeat, hot dogs, and that sort of thing are too high in fat. Also make sure that your dog has no access to the trashcan. What kind of treats were you giving her? There are some brands that are high in fat, and probably wouldn't hurt a larger breed, but it's too much fat for a yorkie. What's the fat content of your kibble? Best of luck, I didn't realize they had a fever with pancreatitis, that really threw me off. |
Thank you so much for your advice. The health extension is low in fat. I'm trying to figure out what she ate. We didn't go anywhere and no one was here. My babies don't get table scraps. Hmmm.... Aparently she got the fever from the infection in her pancreas. I just called the hospital and she has been sleeping most of the day and now she is awake and alert. I miss her terribly. Just the thought of her in a cage all alone thinking I abandoned her. I will call them in the morning and we will go visit. Hopefully she will be home on Sunday. She is also in a great hospital with round the clock live people there. They have been so great. |
