Excessive Panting!!! Please read
 

My puppy is 1 year old and the last week or so he seems to be panting a lot, he has been drinking plenty of water, and other then the panting he has not shown any other symptoms. i did take him to the vet a week ago, for piddling, he is taking antibiotics, could this be causing the panting?

Living in Florida may be his problem. ;) He's hot...panting is how their bodies cool itself.

yeah, but he is already 1 year old, and we have always lived in florida, the panting started about the same time he started the antibiotics.

I would take him again to the vet and if you dont like his results I would seek another vet that may have more knowledge about small breeds..Good Luck to you....

I have no idea why he's panting excessively. I'd call your vet ask and ask them what they think. Did you get a list of side effects for the antibiotic?

And is his water bowl at room temperature, or do you keep it cold? That might help.

That's weird. I too live in Fl and my Coco pants alot. She otherwise seems fine too. Drinks plenty. Most of the time she does it and we are inside so I know she's not hot. When she was little I swear I noticed she did it when she was getting sleepy. She is my first dog so I was worried at first but just figured it's a dog thing. I know they do it when they are hot, but I always found it odd she did it indoors.:confused:

I serve the water at room temperature most times but every so often I drop ice into the bowl, my cats share this bowl as well and they love licking on ice cubes.

I would call your vet and let the vet know about the excessive panting that started when you started the meds.

I recently went through this with one of my dogs was given one type of pain meds and when I let the vet know my vet switched us to another med.

Hi there, I don't know if you happened to see the thread I started the other day or not, but I just took my baby to the vet yesterday for this very same reason (sudden panting). I may have missed it in your post, but what antibiotic is your baby on? I would definitely get online and look up the side effects of that specific medication. Panting could certainly be a side effect. I took my baby in yesterday to the vet because she was panting, and it turns out that she actually has an infection in her chest. So the vet put her on antibiotics (Clavamox) to help clear it.

Is she panting when she is indoors too, in the cool A/C? She doesn't just pant when she is outside in the heat, correct? If so then you know there is a problem. That's how I knew. Tatum would pant if she was running around outside and it was hot and she was tired/exhausted....but she never panted when she was inside in the cool air, and there was no reason for her to. So I knew good and well when she started doing it the second time (the next day after she started the first time) and she was indoors, that there was definitely a problem. Something was going on because she was in no way "physically" hot. So if your baby is doing this as well, then I would definitely be suspicious.

It could very easily just be the meds, maybe it is a reaction that she is having to it. Could be a side effect from that medication. I would look that up online for sure. If that medication doesn't list excessive panting as a side effect, it could possibly be an infection somewhere. The vet listened to my Tatum's chest and heard lots of rattling....turns out she has an infection.

He is taking Clavamox

He does pant when he is indoors in the A/C, he is very active and these are the times I have noticed him panting a lot within the last week. Before that though he would only pant if he was outisde for a while. He does have a tendency of becoming out of breath when he runs around a lot. But the panting only started about a week ago around the same time i took him to the Vet for a possible UTI. He does not seem to have any other symptoms other then the panting, no shakes. He does cough a little but that only occurs after he drinks water cause he drinks to fast, he has always had that. So as i mentioned on my previous post he is already on Clavamox.

Ahhhhhh, BINGO! You may have your answer then. One of the side effects of Clavamox IS a rapid heart rate and excessive panting. So, I would ABSOLUTELY discuss this with your vet.

You said you noticed the panting almost as soon as you started him on Clavamox, so it could honestly very well be the cause. It if IS, you really should get him off of this medication pretty quickly as a rapid heart rate and panting is considered a serious side effect to the medication. Amoxicillin and Clavulanate are the two drugs that are used to make Clavamox....do you know if your baby happens to be allergic to Penicillin? The reason I ask is because Amoxicillin is closely related to Penicillin.

I would definitely run this by your vet and see what he thinks. I just find it kind of odd that the panting started as soon as you started him on the Clavamox, and panting DOES happen to be a side effect of this particular medication.

My Tatum has been on Clavamox a gazillion and one times, and she has never had a problem with it (actually, that amazes me..lol) but your baby obviously is. Something is going on.... I would call your vet and talk to him about this ASAP.

I'm not sure about the allergy, I know he has taken antibiotics when he was 4 months for a cold, i can't remember what he took though.

Yeah, I would just run all this by your vet. :) Tell him that you read online that one of the side effects of Clavamox is excessive panting, and that is exactly what your baby started doing after you started him on the med. Also have him check his heart rate.

Even is he has taken the same medication with no issue previously it could still cause a reaction at a later date... same for humans :)
