hernia i brought a yorkie a couple days ago, i took her to my vet and he found hernia. the vet said it an be removed and i can breed her. but should i ask breeder i brought her from for my money back, or a new puppy or keep her. |
I wouldn't breed a girl that had a hernia as that is genetic. For a pet it's no real big deal, but you should've known about it as it HAS to be fixed. Usually people will lower the price to cover the vet bill. So if you bought her to breed I would return her - if she is a pet I would just get it fixed. I hope that helps!! :) |
Our Yorkies are pets. Our first one, Ginger, was purchased from a pet store. When we took her to be spayed, the vet said she had a double hernia and they fixed them while spaying her. She is 5 yrs old now. Our second Yorkie, Maggie, was listed by the breeder at a significantly reduced price because of a small hernia. We fell in love with her and purchased her. We just took her to the vet for her 1st rabies shot and told her about the hernia but said we don't see it. She checked Maggie over and said she can tell where it was but that it has closed itself up and that she doesn't need hernia surgery. She is 4 1/2 months old now. It's no big deal to have the hernia repair though and doesn't cost much more when done at the time of the spay. |
Hernias can be caused buy the mother pulling on the umbilical cord while she chews it off or it can be genetic. Since there is no way to know, your puppy shouldn't be bred as she could pass it on to her puppies. It's a very simple fix during the spay and as the posters said, the price is usually reduced a few hundred dollars to cover the expense of fixing it. |
