puppy advice Hey My Name is Katie and I am new to YT. I am about to bring home my first Yorkie male "Smith Jarrett" Next weekend and I am so nervous. were any of you apprehensive about your first pup. I want him to be healthy and everything but looking at the blogs and seeing that so many of these adorable puppies get sick often scares me a little. I have been wanting a Yorkie for about 3 years now but didn't have the time(due to nursing school). Now i do have the time and I am scared!!! |
hmmm... I think I just responded to another thread similar to this one. Before buying a yorkie one must do their homework. Yorkies aren't sickly dogs. Yorkies become sickly dogs due to poor breeding, poor living situations. If you take your time looking for your dog while doing your homework on the breeder(s) you will be fine. However, just like skin babies...in the end you never know what your truly going to get so you need to try to be prepared for anything that should come your way. |
Are you getting your puppy from a reputable breeder who keeps the puppies until they are 12 weeks old and does all the health testing on the parents? By health testing, I don't mean a routine physical. Reputable breeders screen for genetic conditions Yorkies are prone to like liver shunts, luxating patellas, Legg-Perthes, etc. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a liver shunt that all other breeds combined. All breeders should have their adults bile acid tested and be able to show you the results. You should have a bile acids test done on your puppy after he is 20 weeks old to make sure he doesn't have a shunt or liver disease. Your breeder should have had the knees checked on his parents and be able to show you proof that they don't have luxating patellas. In addition, breeding dogs should have eyes CERFed, thyroid panels, and be screened for heart disease. A good breeder will give you a health guarantee on genetic conditions for at least the first year, often up to five years. If your breeder has done that, then she is reputable and you should stop worrying! |
