My Geita is sick...? My 9 year old Yorkie has vaginal discharge and is running a fever of 103.6. She seems a little depressed and shaky. She is refusing food and water. She has not had puppies nor has she been in heat since I got her. ( she was rescued from a puppy mill in December 2008) She has not been spayed because our vet did not think that was a good idea due to her age. Her vulva is swollen but to be honest it has always looked swollen. I left the house around 4 p.m. today and when I got back around 7 p.m she was still laying in my bead and in this condition. Before I had left the house she seemed fine and had eaten her lunch with no problems earlier today.Any suggestions on what could be going on? |
She needs to see a vet ASAP . Running a fever can mean there is an infection going on somewhere in her body. Please take her in and get her treated . |
What color is the discharge? She could have pyometra. If she's in good health other wise there in no reason she shouldnt be spayed. Unaltered pets develope other health problems that could have been avoided had they been spayed. For example mammary tumors, pyometra and if that's what she's got they should spay her. If your vet still says no ( find another vet) she's not too old to be spayed, just have them do pre-aneasthetic blood work first. And if she needs dentistry they should do that at the same time. |
I agree My other babies are spayed and neutered, but I trusted my vet's opinion. However, this is something that has been weighing heavy on my mind because I know the complications a female can have especially when getting older in age. Sweet Geita due to poor health when first rescued had to have all but three teeth pulled, it was horrible. It was amazing to see her almost "come alive" a few days after having all of those rotted teeth removed. She was heart worm negative which was a big bullet dodged, and of course is on preventative now. So up until this point she has been in near perfect health with the exception of being almost a pound over weight. I gave her half of a baby bayer, and her fever has broken, I took her temp again about 10 minutes ago and it was 101.1. Up until that point I had put a little ice pack under her blankie on the couch. Hoping that would help cool her down. She has drank water and she also has eaten a puperoni treat and a few bites of a twinkie. Her discharge seems to have stopped as well, but when it was first coming out it was a very pale yellow. I still plan to take her to the vet first thing in the morning though. |
Yes Please do take her to the vet. Was it discharge or thicker and non-transparent? |
It was a very pale yellow but transparent, almost un-noticable. I am constantly checking her and grooming her so if it was not for that it probably would have gone un-noticed. Geita and I were at the vet this morning at 8 a.m. and we waited for our vet to show up which was not until about 10:15 a.m. As soon as Dr. Odom walked through the door I began telling her what was going on and asking if it could possibly be Pyrometra. She said it was very likely my Geita girl's problem and took her straight into the exam room to start blood work and prep her for surgery. So now it is just a waiting game, I have been praying that my little Geita Lupita makes it out of surgery okay. Although I have only had her for a little over six months she has my heart in her little paws and I love her more than words can say. I have been waiting for a call since I got home but I think I am going to call and check on her instead of waiting, I know how busy it can get up there. As soon as I get some one on the phone I will post another update. Thank you for all your help. |
I'm so sorry your baby isn't feeling well. I'll keep her in my thoughts as I pray for a smooth, successful surgery. I'd also like to welcome you to YT! We'd love to see pictures of Geita once she's feeling better. |
I hope she is better soon ~ precious girl :( |
Aww...I hope she's ok. Please post and let us know... Keeping her in my prayers. |
Geita is HOME!!! :D My Little Geita darling is finally back home. She made it through surgery, but she is having a hard time coming completely out of her "drugged state". Her tongue is almost all the way back in her mouth and she looks at me when I talk to her. The amazing thing other than my darling girl being alive is that she is at her healthy weight now. Her tiny 4 lb frame has been about a pound over weight for months now, and we have had her on a special diet thinking her metabolism had just slowed down due to age. Who knew it was due to the orange size pus ball in her uteris. Thankfully it was open Pyrometra or my baby would probably not be laying in my lap right now. Thanks to all for your prayers and helpful advice. I am so extremely happy and I thank God, he watched over my Geita Lupita!:aimeeyork I don't know how to post pictures in the forum but there is a picture of my teeny weeny Geita with her stuffed bff on my profile. |

I can\'t wait to see pictures :p |
Terrific news!!! :D Thank you for the update! |
Thank GOD! She\'s ok . Now you need to cook her some brocolli a couple of times a week to get some calcium in her . Just like people , when we don\'t have our estrogen in play we need extra calcium. Here\'s to many more happy years with your little angel. |
Not out of the wood work yet..... Geita has gotten up several times to make a bowl movement and nothing but blood has come out. When this first happened I called the vet and she said a little bit is normal. That she is getting all the toxins out. However, this has happened several more times and sometimes when she gets up she strains and then finally a few drops of blood will comes out. Or this dark thick goo will come out and then blood. Once again I am terrified something is really wrong. I am positive this is not coming out of her vagina because I have cleaned her up with a baby wipe everytime and it is definitely coming out of her anus. Anyone have advice on what could be going on? |
I would take her to the ER immediately. Better to be safe then sorry. |
