Rash/Allergies?? Help! 1 Attachment(s) I come home one day to find Bentley on the back of the couch acting crazy and every muscle in his body was tight. I looked closer and saw red spots all over his body. I took him to the vet and they say it is allergies (external..nothing that he has eaten but it is from something he has touched) so they gave him a steroid and sent him home. I wake up the next morning to find it worse so we went BACK to the vet where they gave him another steroid and told me to give him benedryl every few hours. He is staying at my parents for now because we thought he may be allergic to something in the apartment. It has been 5 days and the spots are NOT getting any better. I would think that if it was allergies it would have improved by now....right? I have attached a picture of what it looks like. Help! What can this be? |

I need more info... Does his skin feel sticky or gooey or is it dry to the touch? Any odor? Any small black spots almost like a blackhead but smaller and flat? Any flaking skin? Any puckering type skin or hair loss around scrotum or chest? Any small flakes around the very edges of his ears? Any flaking on his feet? Does he itch? |
He was itchy before we gave him the benedryl. We took him to a different vet the other day and they seem to think it is a virus so they gave him some antibiotics. We havent noticed an improvement but it has only been a day. I hope it works....... They said that if the antibiotics dont work that they will need to do blood work. This scares me so much because no one seems to know what it could be. :( |
It does look like some sort of allergic reaction. Did you change laundry detergent, has he been laying in the grass. Because of where it is it does seem like some sort of contact allergy. I hope you can get some answers. |
Hi and Welcome to YT!!! I don't think it's allegies ... wouldn't the spots be more evenly distributed? The photo is a bit light, but it looks very similar to my dog when he came down with sarcoptic mange (scabies). My vet did some research and discovered that Yorkies are predisposed to be afflicted by scabies. One very telltale sign is (put on a pair of magnifying glasses) and look at the very edge of his ears. You will see very tiny white oblong flakes. You may have to separate the hairs even if the ears are trimmed to see it. The dog may or may not be scratching his ears. Also, if you live anywhere near a wildlife crossing ie: raccoon, fox, rabbit, etc. or your dog crosses a path or rolls in leaves... he is much more apt to pick up this bug. Easy way to tell: Use Revolution for his heartworm tx this month and again in 3 weeks. It kills sarcoptic mange and other mites, and unless you have an undefined need to know exactly what it is and have the time and money and patience to put your pup through any number of tests and skin scrapings and bloodwork and time spent suffering while all this is being done, and countless medications that may or more likely may not work, Revolution will work and show marked improvement in a day. If Revolution doesn't work, then you know it's not mange or mites and you still save money on the skin scrappings, and it wasn't wasted bc it still did the heartworm thing that needs to be done anyway. I would do this first also to eliminate the need to alleviate the symptoms through diet changes, which can be very time consuming, especially if it's mange, diet changed won't work either. My neighbor's dogs came down with this...poor things ... she said they've been itching for months, and her husband had come down with scabies too! I told her what my vet said, and she called her vet (again) and he wanted to see both dogs again. I think they did do skin scrapings (again), but he said to use the Revolution anyway. Skin scrappings don't always show anything ... you have to scrape exactly where the noseeums are, and as they migrate, and you can't see them, its easy to miss. |
Sarcoptic Mange in Dogs above is info on scabies but if you are not itching and do not have rash as highly contagious to humans and my grandma's dog had it and she got it. Yes the revolution will rule this out as we used it in my allergy dog to rule out scabies as well. I have an allergy dog for almost 5 years and have seen it all and this to me looks like an allergic reaction to something - i strongly recommend biting the bullet and going straight to a dermatologist and they will get to the source immediately as the vets will just keep doing the steroid thing and mask the problem and you need to get to the heart of the problem here are some pics of my girl and what i have been through DEE DEE ALLERGIES pictures by dwerten - Photobucket what are you feeding as this could be a reaction to diet as well as could be a contact allergent- did you move into a new apt and maybe they cleaned carpet with a chemical that he is reacting too ? |
