Jasper 7 year old to have ACL surgery Looking for anyone to chat with whos Yorkie has had successful ACL surgery. What was recovery like, are you happy you did it? Jasper is scheduled for June 16 |
Shelby is my 5 year old little girl (YORKIE, of course! ;) ). She was diagnosed with a partial ACL tear. This came about 1 year after she had luxating patella surgery on both knees. First I thought it may be a migrating pin and we went to her orthopedic surgeon, who confirmed (via x-rays) that her knees were still in tact and looked good. First she needed 4-6 weeks of complete rest on the leg...... and with the exception of potty time, no walking or running or jumping. She was crated when I wasn't carrying or holding her. A partial ACL tear doesn't always need surgery..... the cartilage around the ligament will strengthen the area and "support" the ACL according to the PT that we are going to. After the rest, we started going to a animal rehabilitation center and she gets physical therapy. (She first had sessions that consisted of healing type therapies... e-stim and laser therapy.) She has now started strengthening therapy via exercises and hydro-therapy (underwater treadmill). Her leg seems to be strengthening!!!..... She barely favors it anymore.... just when she decides to run fast....... which I am trying to keep her from doing while she is still in a "healing" process. I think we have managed to avoid surgery ...... hopefully we will continue to get better and not have any relapses. Does your dog have a full tear or a partial one? Has rehabilitation been considered or is it not a possibility? That would be a question to ask........ also is there a physical rehab center with therapy for dogs in your area? Sorry so long..... hope that things go well ....... and hope that Shelby's story helps, too! |
years ago my male zorro tore his ACL and they regrooved his knee cap. He did very well after surgery. My inlaws were in from Fla for 2 weeks so they watched hi during the day. I think after a few days he was up and about a little. He still held that leg up a little when standing after the surgery. Good luck |
My 12 year old yorkie, Gizmo, had TPLO surgery two years ago this month. I will be glad to answer any questions you might have. He has done fantastic to have been as old as he was. He walks, runs, plays ball and is completely normal, actually better than before. We nursed his knee for several years, then on Father's Day two years ago he jumped too high trying to catch a tennis ball and we had no choice. I manage a vet clinic here and we have an excellent, board certified ortho surgery here in town and she is wonderful. I would not have anyone else do his surgery and it was worth it. The recovery time is very trying, I won't pretend. He could not run, jump, etc for 12 weeks and he had to be walked on a leash only for very short distances. We carried him everywhere (and he is a teapot - 13 lb) up and down the stairs, up and down off the couch, the car, but he was very good about it. Even now two years later he will sometimes look for me to pick him up. Just let me know if I can help. |
