Lump on tummy My Mollie is a 7 year old yorkie, a retired breeder dog, i got her last year from my breeder, immediately had her spayed. She's been wonderful, no health problems, tonight I noticed a large lump on her chest - mid chest, between her nipples. I gave her a bath three days ago, there was no lump. It seems larger this evening than when I first noticed it this afternoon. It doesn't hurt her, but it's the size of my thumb pad, firm and seems to be palpable. Of course I'm in a panic. Anybody have any thoughts on this? I gave her Advantix a couple of days ago for the first time. Could Advantix cause this lump? Oh, I hope it's not breast cancer, I'm really panicked. Thanks for any help you can give me. |
It's sounds like it could be a mammary tumor. Unspayed female dogs have a 25% chance of getting mammary tumors when they age. The risk is higher if they've had puppies. Try not to panic as 50% of mammary tumors are benign. Early detection is the key. Here's a good article for you: Mammary Tumors (Canine) |
I hope it is nothing serious! |
Definitely see the vet and it could be a mammary tumor but with it being in the center and up toward her chest, it could be something else. A lot of cases of mammary cancer occur down by the 4th and 5th set of mammary glands as far as I know. |
thanks for the information my neighbor is a retired vet, i took mollie to him first thing this morning, he thinks it's a hernia, so i'm taking her to regular vet in the morning. i actually hope it is a hernia, that's fixable, i was so scared it was cancer. he said because it popped so quickly he thinks it's a tumor, and it's right by her belly button. he also felt it and said it didn't feel like a cancerous lump. so here's to hopin. i'll update. |

Hernias are much less scary than tumors! How lucky you are to have a vet next door. :D |
Oops I meant to say that because it's by her belly button in the middle he thinks it's a hernia. I said tumor and meant hernia. *blush* It's late, I'm tired. And you're right, I am lucky to have him close by... |
You are so luck to have a neighbor who is a vet! I saw your post and was coming back to tell you not to panic and looks like you have already been reassured. Keep up posted what happens tomorrow at the vet. I've got my fingers crossed for hernia ;) |
