my baby has been sick for going on 3 weeks took to vet any suggestions and info? My dog will be 2 in august. he started out throwing up yellow bile lethargic depression diharrea i found red or what looked like to me blood in his diharrea so i rushed him to the vet they gave him a shot and 2 prescriptions 1.Albon (which i think now is for puppies) 2. Metclopimide for the diharrea, I really dont think he got into anything, the vet said it was gastroentits(?) at this point im just not so sure, he didnt run any tests. I have been cooking him chicken and rice and sometimes I put in chuncks of carrots, now his poop is big and long getting firmer but it is yellow and a bit greenish with redish orange rice looking stuff in it now Im wondering if that is rice or worms because I have been feeding him rice?? Could the rice be of orange color from the carrots??? Im completely stressed out by all this I research and research I think its time to shop around for a new vet.. Please if any of you have any information on here I would tremendously appreciate it. Times are tough on the ol wallet but I dont want to jeopordize my babys health but dont want to waste on a bad vet.. Thanks for your time! Munchkin and Nemos mom |
Gastroenteritis means an inflammation of his gastrointestinal tract. His tummy and his intestines. Albon is an anti biotic. What you're seeing in his feces...is a reflection of what you're putting in the other end. ;) I'd eliminate the vegetables for now...feed only bland chicken and rice and gradually add his regular food. |
Did the vet even do a fecal? It sounds like it is time for tests and if this vet didn't even run a fecal, I think I'd go somewhere else. |
If he's not digesting his food properly that can be causing his digestive problems. Lady had repeated bouts of gastroenteritis, then three episodes of HGE. Adding digestive enzymes made a huge difference with her. I use Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics. Lady also had trouble digesting rice. It came out the other end the same way it went in. She does much better with oatmeal. If you plan on keeping him on homecooked permanently, you will have to follow a recipe prepared by a nutritionist. Dogs have very specific nutritional needs. The calcium to phosphorus ratio is especially critical in dogs. If it isn't correct, they can have skeletal, neurological and cardiac problems. |
My TJ was just sick for 1 week with vomit and squirt diharrea. We did a fecal and Giardia and both were negative. I did get him on Metro (sp? anti'b) and fed only boiled chicken and egg noodles (or rice). I did start him on some yogurt that I fed when he got his meds. I hope your baby gets better soon :( |
I took a sample of poop up there with me and they looked at it and took it to the back.. i have put chopped carrots in their food twice like maybe 3 little bity chuncks i picked rice cause thats what every vet has said to do not to mention the research on the internet any other suggestions would be appreciated. the sample i got this morning is different from the one i took up there the last time. i guess i will be going back up there tomorrow im really stressing out he only weighs 4.6lbs. does anyone have a clue what the reddish rice in the poo could be or the yellow color I am gonna get all the info i can to take with me so i get good care for him.. thanks to all that reply and replied |

Can I ask what kind of dog feed you were giving him? Brand? How long on this dog food? Albon can be given to adult dogs as well. The most normal reason is for Coccida. But it has its other uses as well. Carol |

The duration for salmonella is 4 - 7 days. You may want to consider using a higher quality of food than Purina too. I had one who had diarrehea issues when I was feeding wellness...after eliminating all the other possibilities, and feeding a bland diet...I switched foods. Sometimes dogs do get intestinal issues without any apparent cause. You never find out what made the dog ill. |
I have two yorkies that I just had to take in because of diarrhea and vomiting. Our vet said gastroentinitis also. We brought a stool sample but it was too liquid to test and was inconclusive. She gave us cerenia for nausea and sulfaslazine for diarrhea. We kept them off all food for 24 hours and just gave them small amounts of diluted chicken broth and water throughout the day to keep them hydrated. The next day rice and boiled chicken (I mashed up the rice a little because it seemed like my pups were eating too fast and choking on it). 3rd day small amounts of regular food with some of the rice and chicken mixed in it and finally today they are back on small portions of regular food several times a day. We still have them on medicine and they seem to be doing really well. Our vet said we would have to treat it symptomatically since they were unable to determine exactly what they had other then tummy issues. Hopefully your is feeling better soon! |
