Sick from tuna? Please help.
 

Hi everyone,

This is my first post to yorkietalk. Thank you to everyone for being so helpful. I'm on here everyday looking for advice.

Anyway, Roxy is 8 lbs and 5 years old (although I just got her 2 months ago). She's on Wellness super5 mix for small breeds and was doing fine with it for awhile, but recently stopped eating it. I mixed in a little rinsed-off canned tuna two nights in a row in order to get her to eat. It worked, but now she's really sick.

It started with her urinating every couple of hours in the house. I thought maybe she had a UTI, but then the next day we found that she had diarrhea in the house as well. I fed her cooked chicken and rice, as well as canned pumpkin. She pooped in the house again today but this time it was firmer. So it seems like the diarrhea is going away.

However, she's still acting very strange. She's been going in her crate voluntarily for the first time ever. It has just been laying here for months without any use and now shes going in there to lay down. It almost seems like she's hiding or seeking shelter. I've also found her trying to sneak into the closet. She's very restless and will not stay in the same place for more than a few minutes. She keeps pacing around the apartment.

Also, when I take her outside she'll get excited when we first leave the door. Then when we're actually out there she doesn't want to walk. I end up carrying her back inside.

Finally, she seems like she wants to play. She'll bring me her toys, even ones that I haven't seen her play with in months. But once I try to play back she seems uninterested and walks away.

I would appreciate any advice or insight into any of these symptoms. The vet is closed today but I'm debating whether or not to take her there tomorrow. Thank you for your help!

Could she be in heat or pregnant? I even had a dachshund act like this as she started false pregnancy twice. She actually rounded up small plush toys and eventually took them toa closet. She too wanted to nest away from everyone. She acted just as you explained until she took to the closet herself for a week. My yorkie female, Sadie, had a little diarrhea before she went into heat and again when she was ready to have the puppies. So, I am wondering if it is something like that with your girl, heat, false or true pregnancy.

As for the tuna -- I would not feed that -- even the packed in water because of the high mercury levels. They have a warning on the can for pregnant humans not to eat it -- that tells me small dogs should probably not either. We have not had tuna in the house for years, since the mercury levels went up so high.

Thank you for responding! Roxy is spayed, so pregnancy is out of the question. I will definitely not be feeding tuna anymore. I found conflicting info on whether to feed it or not and decided to go for it since I really wanted her to eat. Stupid mistake on my part.

Dogs that hide or want to be left alone usually don't feel well. Given her recent potty habits that's no doubt. I would take her to the Vet, it sounds like she wants to be left alone but yet wants to play outside but something is stopping her. I know my yorkie likes tuna but I seldom give it to her. Tuna I know is not good for cats

Hope she is feeling better. I would get her to the vet tomorrow if she is still acting sick.

Thanks everyone for your concern. I brought Roxy to the vet and it turns out that she has swollen, almost infected anal glands which the diarrhea from the tuna exacerbated. So she gave me an antibiotic and hopefully Roxy will be back to normal soon :)

I'm glad you found out what was going on with her! Now she will get back to being herself. :)
