Yorkie heatstroke! Please can someone help! I took my three yorkies to the park yesterday for a little run. All seemed good and they had a great time! When I got home, Lilly seemed to have some kind of collapse, and was lying on her back. I totally freaked out, picked her up and got her inside. At first I thought her back had been broken because she could not stand and seemed to be listing to one side. She had a wild vacant stare in her eyes which I had never seen before. I thought maybe it was concussion, maybe sh had run into one of the plant pots out near the front door! She would not drink. She just lay there. Later she started vomiting very violently, bringing up a frothy yellow bile. We phoned the vet who just told us to keep an eye on her, and if she got worse, to bring her in. I must also add, she is in heat at the moment, and is getting alot of attention from Stevie, our male Yorkie. She does not seen to have gotten any worse, but she now justs lies down quietly, very subdued, deflated even depressed. This is not the same Lilly! What could this be? I have never seen her like this before! Can anyone throw any light on this? Help!!:mad: |
Our Laddy did this once but he was much younger...it was hypoglycemia and we had to dose him up with Nutri-cal. I am not sure if older dogs go through this or not but it would be worth a try. :( |
I would keep her away from the male dog, and get her to a vet. She probably needs intravenous fluids. She doesn't need any additional stress or activity from the male. My daughter's cat was in the dryer for awhile, spinning around. She had an IV, and survived, but she was out of it for a few days. But I would definitely get your baby to a vet. |

You need to give her some neutracal and take her to the vet asap. Sounds like a Hypoglycemia. Low Sugar..Kyro syrup is fine too.... |

If she can't lick it off your fingers, rub some on her gums. |
If you can't get to the vet straight away, Check her gum color (should be med-deep pink), check her temperature. If you don't have a thermometer, touch her ears and pads of her feet. If they feel hot, apply rubbing alcohol to ears (careful not in the eyes) and pads of the feet to cool her down. Watch she doesn't get chilled. The alcohol will evaporate quickly. If she gets chilled, warm her up. |

If could be heat stroke. My pom got it from the grromers and when I picker her up she was breathing weird and couldn't stand up. I raced her to the vet and they placed her in a oxygen chamber, gave her fluids through an IV and cooled her temp down with a cooling pad. It took a few hours at the vets and then she was much better. I hope she is better now. |
Last summer I left my 16 week old puppy with my DH for a few days. He put Piper in her x-pen outside in the August afternoon sun with no water and started putt putting in the yard. An hour later he goes to go in the house and he notices that Piper is just lying in her pen. She was also throwing up and listless. He knew immediately she was over heated and put her in cool water and gave her some nutrical (at least he remembered what I told him about that) and rushed her to the vets. Time she was seen by the vet she was back to normal. Piper really gave him a scare. He just didn't realize how vulnerable these babies are. |
this is the very reason why I have not been taking Suzi out for walks much. It has been so hot out here in CA lately! I am scared of Heat stroke. SHe goes out with me on the balcony and that is enough for her to pant. I hope Lilly is going to be ok. Remember that dogs body temps are naturally higher then ours, and can overheat so much quicker then we do. If this were my Suzi I would be taking her to the VET . I get very scared with things like that. |
Yes it sounds like heat stroke or low sugar. always keep nutri-cal with you and give her some pedylite. they should never be out in the heat like this. if the nutrical and or pedylite does not perk her right up, then get her to the vet ASAP. throwing up yellow is bile, sounds like an empty tummy and being the heat like that they can go down hill fast. |
It may be heat stroke but I'd give her some honey, sugar, nutri-cal, agave, or something very sweet to make sure she's not hypo first. Then be sure to keep her cool, lots of water and keep an eye on her. Curly pulled this little stunt a while back and came right back to life when I put a bunch of honey in her mouth. |
