Streaming Eyes Hello everyone, I am a first time owner of a Yorkie and don't have a clue! One issue that I have is that in the 5 weeks we have had her she has had eyes that stream continually. It is this ugly brown gunk that leaves nasty streaks down her face. The vet gave me eye drops wich I put in faithfully for ten days and it didn't help one bit. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks:confused: |
If physical issues have been ruled out...it's genetic and some tear more than others. You can try switching her food to a grain free formula, and others report good results with bottled water. |
Joey had this problem as a puppy, and a switch to distilled water helped, no tearing at all afterwards. He outgrew the problem and we were able to use regular tap water. His eyes have been clear and several months ago I switched foods, and the brown eye gunk returned, and so I switched him back to his old food, and his eyes cleared up again. I decided to do one more test with the new food, and within a day the brown gunk returned so we are back on his regular food. I'm not sure what caused it for Joey, some sensitivity to the tap water at first, and later perhaps some mineral in the food. If you switch your water, don't get regular bottled water it has to be distilled water, where all the minerals are taken out. You can buy it at Walmart, it's the kind you use in baby formula, and only $1.00 a gallon. Most supermarkets carry some type, but it needs to say drinkable, because most distilled water is meant for appliances, and not always safe for drinking. |
hi im a first time yorkie owner 2, molly has little tear marks on her face, although not too much, i wash her little face every day with a wet face cloth, and she seems to be fine with that, i found a buils up on her face a few days after i brought her home, so maybe if you do her face every morning it might not seem so much, just a sugestion :) i hope this helps.x |
Thank you These suggestions are a good place to start. I did wonder if it was a food allergy. I was oping it wasn't to beef or chicken as she is already a fussy eater. I will try the water suggestion as that is an easy start and then if that doesn't solve it will try the corn suggestion. It is also helpful to know she might grow out of it. I have been bathing her once a week but might start the face wash evreyday. She looks quite unhealthy at the moment. |
Welcome!! Does she have hairs poking in her eyes, that can cause excess tearing. I used distilled water and it helped then I stopped but I think I will go back to it as Roxie's eyes tear a lot too. |
I wonder if this is normally common in Yorkies. Our previous yorkie had continual black gunk and our new one does too. I just sorta expected he would have it and he does. I was his face every morning and he loves it because I have turned it into a calming, massage for him LOL. I never gave it a thought about the water or food. Good thought! They already eat no grain food though. |
