Sick Frederick Hi everyone. Frederick is not feeling well and unfortunately the vet is closed :( He has not been wanting to play and just keeps laying around. He hasn't been eating much either. His temp is 102.5. He also keeps licking alot. He has been sticking his tongue out really far and licking his nose, which I've never seen him do before. Other than that, there are no other symptoms. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks for the help! |
His temperature is running a little high. I would be concerned that with the licking, maybe he has an abscessed tooth or some kind of infection somewhere. Is he eating and drinking? Please check his gums and mouth to see if you see anything. Do you have a ER vet in your area? Please keep us posted. I hope he feels better soon. |
Hi. How old is Frederick? What kinds of treats/toys does he have access to? Are his tongue/gums pink? When you press on the gum and it turns white, does the pink color come right back when you lift your finger? Do you see any increase in nasal discharge or salivation? Does his tummy look bloated? Is there any difference in his breathing whether he's on his right, left sides or on his back or chest? Does he favor one position or is he changing positions alot? Sorry ... Are all his toys accounted for? Any in pieces? All pieces accounted for?Are all your toys accounted for? IE: TV remotes, cell phones, batteries, any shredded house plants? Anything else he could gain access to? Sorry again ... when was his last poo? Was it normal? When did he last eat and what? |
Frederick is about 1.5 yrs old. He only has access to his favorite ball and the occassional treat I give him. I just checked his teeth and he has red gums with some black on them, and I just noticed that he does have some blood on a couple teeth. What could cause that? He was just recently at the vet and they said how good his teeth look. He also has really really bad breath all of a sudden. The gums turn red quickly after I touch them. I dont see any nasal discharge at all. His tummy and breathing seem ok. I'm not sure about his poo because he has a doggie door and goes out whenever he wants. I don't see anything he could have eaten, and I never have a problem with him eating things around the house. He last ate yesterday evening because I hand fed him. Now that I have noticed his bleeding gums, I'm worried. I really dont see how that came on so fast. Thanks for any info!! |
It sounds like he might have an abscess in his mouth. It would be good to get him to the vets tomorrow. I also recommend that you start keeping an eye on his stool. Loose stools is a major indication of illness and also by checking the stool periodically you can spot tape worms if he happens to get them. At least, while he is not feeling well, maybe you should escort him outside. Dogs can easily eat something outside that they should not and they can get very sick. Please keep us updated on how he is doing. |

If he were mine I'd get him to an EV for xrays today. |
Since he's running a fever, something is going on. I'd take him to the ER vet. Toy breeds dogs can dehydrate and go downhill so quickly, it's never a good idea to wait. |
Well, he woke up today and started eating, drinking, and playing like normal. His fever went away too. I'm not sure what was happening, but at least I can save some money and not have to go to the ER vet now. I will be taking him to the regular vet in the morning just to be safe though. Thanks for all the help! :animal36 |
