What's wrong with my Puppy? Please help! My 14 weeks puppy got sick two weeks ago, and I brought him to the Vet for AB treatment. He is doing somewhat better, but not quite. I've been feeding him boiled chicken. He refused to eat the brown rice, puppy food, and everything else, too. He drinks lots of water, that's good, right? I got several suggestions from everyone here about brown rice, cottage cheese, boiled chicken, even hard boiled egg, but it's not working. When will he be eating his puppy food again? I bought a tube of NutriCal to try out, tonight. His energy level has been up and down. When it's down, he looks like a dead puppy. What else can I do to get this dog eat, again? Two weeks ago, he sneezed a lot, and tons of clear slimmy stuff came out of his nose. Funny, I have him sleep with me for two nights, and the sneezing stop. Is he LONELY? |
I would continue to feed him the boiled chicken if that is what he will eat. Cut it up fine and try mixing it with a little ground up good quality puppy kibble. gradually give him more kibble. If he continues to act sickly please take him back to the vet. These little guys can go down very quickly. |
I'll bump this up for you. If he's sneezing once in awhile I wouldn't worry to much about that. Puppy's sneeze expecially now with spring here. I would be concerned about eating. Try the white rice. Brown is better but white is fine also. I use that for Buddy. If he won't eat the chicken and rice try frying up hamburger and cooking it real good then draining as much as the fat off as you can. Mix that with the rice and see if he eat's it. Does he poop ok? Some are picky eater's. If he's not vomiting and does not have the diarrhea just keep an eye out. Sounds like your doing everything right, maybe he needs more time to adjust. |
You need to keep him eating whatever he will eat. Try to feed him severaL small meals. Give him a pea size amount of nutrical every 3 hrs. If he ever gets down as you say and the nutrical doesnt bring him out of it youve got to get him to the vet right away so they can get an IV in him. You might want to have your vet bile acid test him because pups with liver problems also have trouble maintaining their sugar levels |
Oh, I feel your pain! When I first got my little Luna, she wouldn't eat hardly at ALL:cry: She ended up at the ER vet almost dead:eek: Her sugar level was extremely low and the vet said if I had waited another HOUR she wouldn't have made it:( Please keep checking her gums to make sure that they remain dark pink. Very light pink or gray coloring means that their blood sugar is dangerously low. If she won't eat the Nutrical, try this recipe that a breeder gave me. Here is the thread, with the recipe and our story. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oglycemia.html This really saved my sanity and Luna's life. She was purchased at a pet store and was so sickly:cry: If you follow the whole thread, Diggy4 also posted a terrific recipe for fussy eaters that sounds really good, in case your baby won't eat the first one. The problem with my Luna was partly due to her being younger than the store said (I believe now) and she just could not chew the kibbles that they sent home with us, or any other kinds that I tried. You may need to pulverize some in the food processor or blender for a while until her teeth and mouth can handle it whole;) Good luck, and please keep us posted. We worry, y'know:D |
Thank you so much for all your suggestions/advices. I will definately try out the formula for hypoglycemia. KiKi has been on/off, and sleep a lot, too. He eat a little bit, and then stop. He shake like a chihuahua, this morning. Anyway, I saw him eat at the breeder's home (Eukanuba puppy food), and he was very playful. He was fine on our first day together. It went down-hill since. My observation is...When KiKi has no food in his stomach and he drink alot of water, he ended up sneezing up this clear slimmy stuff. He pee ok, not too much poop. I need a miracle. |
He seems like maybe he needs to be at a vets on IV. He just sounds like he has alot of down periods and thats not normal for a healthy puppy. I suspect he as an underlying health problem. Is he on any meds? |
KiKi is on his last 3 days of Antibiotic. He drinks a lot though, and is starting to eat the food that I cooked for him this morning (2/3 cup so far). Is he lonely? I'm thinking about getting him a play-mate, a girl. I saw the parents this afternoon, and I like them already. I'm hoping the girl will help him eat and play, again. |
Make sure yr little one is fully healthy before getting another yorkie. Pls if he's not improving soon take him to the vet. |
I dont think you should get another puppy untill this one is well |
I think you need to focus on getting your boy well, and then worry about a playmate. He is not lonely....Something isn't right with him and if he doesn't improve very soon, you need to seek more medical help. They can go down hill very fast when they are young and small :( |
Great advice. I'll wait until my little guy feels better. I'm so worry about him. He came from a huge group of YT, and all of a sudden, he's by himself. I'm gonna make him a special meal, tonight (Formula for Hypoglycemia). He's not sneezing at all today, Yeah...Energy level is still low. |
lots of food whatever he'll eat, water and cuddles, if he was better sleeping with you for 2 nights do it again and again maybe he is just needing more love and warmth from you. Don't get another pup yet as you hands are already full with a little furbaby that needs extra attention. |
If he is still sneezing and having a runny nose he should go back to the vet. What AB's was he on? If a dog does not show marked improvement in 24-48 hours, he should be rechecked by the vet. Unless they do a culture, they can only guess at which AB will work. It is an educated guess, but it can still be wrong. When the AB's work, your pup will feel much better, and should eat. Also check his temp with a baby thermometer. High temp =wrong AB=recheck |
