Help my baby has Pancreatitis...should I go to the Er vet? My Cinnamon had been vomiting for about 24 hrs so I took her into the regular vet today. He thought it was a mild case of Pancreatitis and gave her Flagyl and Reglan. He also gave her some fluids as she was dehydrated. Other than vomiting she seemed like her regular self...so far no diarrhea either but hadnt really eaten anything in a day or so. So today after the vet she seemed better all day and then this evening she wanted to eat grass again which always means she wants to vomit. I gave her the Reglan and hoped that would help, but her stomach is churning like crazy now and she is getting ready to vomit again. Im afraid she wont be able to keep the medications that I gave her down. She took them over an hour ago so hopefully if she vomits soon they will be absorbed. If she cant keep the medication down though how will she get better? Also he gave me some id food and told me to give her a small spoonful tonight, but she wouldnt touch it, which I figured she wouldnt. He also said to only give ice, no water but it is hard to keep her out of any water when I have two other dogs. i am just so worried and wondering is she need to go to the er vet to get iv meds. Her stomach is so loud that i can hear it across the room which is new. I dont want to overreact...I spent $90 today at the vet...I hate to think of spending more but I also dont want to take chances. If you have been through this before...does it just take awhile to get better? Should I let her eat grass so she does vomit? It seems to make her feel better but I hate to see it. Please give me any advice you can. |
Oh no... I don't have advice :( But I will be praying for her |
I have no clue but hopefully someone with a little more knowledge about this will come on! Poor baby! :( |
When my dog had pancreatitis he ended up staying two nights at the vet...my vet said that is can be a very serious condition... If she throws up...I would consider taking her to the er.... but my guy would not stop throwing up at all... so he went in.... |
Unless she is vomiting repeatedly she should be fine but I certainly wouldn't be letting her eat grass |
Thanks for your concerns...I hate to be giving a blow by blow but you all know how it is when your baby is sick. I know its crazy, but I cant eat I am so worried and I am never like that. She never did vomit so really she has only vomited one time today, before the vet. I guess I am worried because he stomach is gurgling so loud she must be uncomfortable. She keeps trying to go out so she can eat more grass which is what made me think she needed to throw up. Her stomach was not doing this gurgling before so part of me worries if she is getting worse. Part of me worries they have missed the diagnosis and maybe she is on the wrong meds. I cant stand to see her so uncomfortable. She hasnt eaten since a small amount last night ,though she is drinking water. She seems a little sluggish now too, which is new, but I think the Reglan can do that too. I do have an er vet 10 minutes away so that is a comfort if I need it. Pray she is better tomorrow. |
did he do lab work???? that's the only real way to know if that is the problem. The white count and liver enzymes. we almost lost a baby to this terrible illness. please don't take any chances... er visit is really indicated... |
No lab work at all...which is why I worry they could be wrong...though as a nurse myself, it seems like the treatment would be very similar...rest the stomach and hydrate, antibiotics for any infection. I do kind of worry about an obstruction, though she did have a normal bowel movement last night in the middle of all this. |
Sorry to hear your baby is sick. If you think she is no better get her in to the ER vet. These little ones can scare us so bad. Cali had HGE a month or so ago, a very bad gastritis. I took her to the ER vet on a Sunday night and they gave her some meds and fluids. she wasn't much better so I took her to my vet on Tuesday and she had to have shots and fluids and I had to bring her back the next day to be hospitalized for the day for more fluids intravenously. It took her a week to get back to herself. I will keep her in my prayers. |
The vet should've done a blood panel and Spec cPL and possibly a TLI to diagnose pancreatitis. I wouldn't say these are the wrong meds because meds aren't always necessary with pancreatitis anyway. The pancreas has to be rested for 24 hours (no food or water which would include ice). Of course this would be hard on them and they would dehydrate, so they are usually hospitalized and given IV fluids. If she is still throwing up and it is pancreatitis, she needs to see the vet. |
Thanks for all your prayers and good wishes. We spent 4 hrs in the er last night but were not able to be seen because they had so many emergencies. After waiting so long, she seemed no worse and was resting comfortably so we went home (we only live 5 minutes away). She did okay the rest of the night and better today. She would not touch the id diet canned food they gave us so I gave her some boiled chicken which she gobbled down. No vomiting since mid day yesterday. I am going back to the vet tomorrow and ask them to do some blood work and give me more guidance on the diet from now on. |
Hope your baby is doing better, any update? |
