3 lb 5 month swallowed folic acid pill My 3 pound, 5 month old Yorkie just swallowed a 800mcg folic acid pill. Can there be a bad adverse reaction to this? Should I be on my way to emergency? |
you need to alteast be CALLING them!!!!!!!!!!!! not sure if it is a poision but why take a chance???????????????????? |
I have called 3 emergency vets and they don't think it's a problem but referred me to 2 poison control lines. They were a human poison control and they also didn't think it was a problem but not sure with a dog so small. |
I live in the country and an hour from the nearest vet and since I was getting mostly "I think it's OK but not sure" responses and most places are closed, I was hoping to hear from someone who might know. |

how is the puppy acting?? has it eaten is it more sleepy than normal? anything different than usual?? these are things I would be concerned about right now. It's been about 1 1/2 hours since your first post, so if she is still acting normal, you may have just gotten lucky. IF SHE IS acting ill IN ANY WAY, RUN don't walk to the nearest er vet. I would stay up and keep an eye on her thru the night, ti does take some time for drugs to work their way thru the system.....GOOD LUCK... |
with it listed in MEGA vitamins, If it was my puppy I would atleast get her to the vet for some labwork to make sure it was absorbed properly and not just staying in the liver. I also have a 3lb 5 mon. old baby and I would be at the vet first thing Monday, IF she is acting pretty normal. YOu don't want her to have an underlying problem from this and not know. dogs/people cannot live with out a liver.. or pancreas. |
Thank you both for your help!! Yorkie Te aMo - that was really helpful - I won't be so hysterical. He (Elf) is not acting any different. He's been bounding around the house, eating, drinking and going to the bathroom. At least, with watching him all during the night, I can get through until tomorrow when I can get him checked. Thanks again. |
I think your little one should be just fine. Did you call Animal Poison Control? On Thursday my Doberman ate a 100ct bottle of prenatal vitamins while my husband and I were at work. Animal Poison Control was more concerned with the iron and vitamin D ingestion than any of the other ingredients. Luckily it wasnt as big of an ordeal as I thought it would be. If you have a HomeAgain microchip the Animal Poison Control call thru them is free. Hoping for the best for your baby!! |
He is micro chipped but not by that company but I'm going to check the company with his chip. Thanks for the idea and for your concern. Glad to hear your dog is OK. I blame myself for this one. I dropped the pill and immediately Elf scarfed it up!! He was that fast. |
They are sooo quick!!! I swear, if I had a dollar every time I used the "leave it" comand at my house :) I was really panicked when I saw the mangled empty bottle but so far so good. APC really helped put my fears to rest. :) Let us know what they say and how your baby is! |
YES< my Suzi would have done the same thing too. i hope your little will will be fine. THis is my worst fear, dropping one of my medications, and Suzi eating it:eek: tHis is the #1 on the list how dogs get poisioned though. Accidental, because they are always with us, and fast as lightning. |
I hope your pup is still doing well. Keep us posted. My dog is fast like that too. If something hits the floor, it's gone!!! I now take all my meds over the kitchen sink just in case. |

would be a good way to give them the meds they are supposed to get though ! |
Thank you all so very much for both the advice and support. Elf is doing fine!!!! No adverse effects at all, thank goodness. He is as energetic (crazy) as ever. But you're right - I will be soooooooo careful with taking medications. I could not beleive how fast he got that!!! Good idea about using that method to give them their own medications! Thanks again. It was my first time using this web site and I really appreciate the caring and support. |
If a dog ingests a pill and you want it out soonest.. give a teaspoon of peroxide.. within a minute the dog is getting sick and this pill will come out of his system...Hope this helps... Any good vet will tell you this... anne |
Thanks, that's really good to know (love Gracie's picture!). |
Hope your baby will be okay. They are sooooo fast. Kayla can catch something in mid air. I am always afraid of medicines or vitamins we might drop. She ate some sugar free cough drops she got out of my purse and I called the poison center and the vet. My vet told me to watch her and if she began to act sleepy etc. to bring her in. (we are about 2min. from my vet) The poison conrtol center wanted to charge me 65.00 to tell me anything. Ugh!!! I said I would never call them again. I will just head for the emergancy room if need be. Again, I hope that little baby will be okay. |
