Anal Gland I had to bring Pao in today because he was licking his bum a little too much and found out that he has an anal gland infection. His poo has been pretty hard but it didn't help to clean out his anal gland enough. The vet said one side of his anal gland has a very thick wall and that didn't help with the condition. We ended up doing an antibiotic infusion and he is on Clavamox twice a day for 14 days and going back to check after 3 weeks to see how the thick walled side is doing as nothing is hardly coming out when the vet excretes it. Anyone with similar experience? Can you please share if yes? I need to know more of what I can do for him. He is on homecooking and I am thinking I have to change his diet? Never had a problem with his glands before until now and he is almost 3 in June. Please check your furry butt's anal glands from time to time. Apparently, it is very common in small breeds. |
Wish I could help, but don't know. I always put a warm cloth on Jemma's bum before I squeeze her glands. I hope all turns out well. Carol and Baby Jemma |
Once the glands are empty feed a bit of canned pumpkin to them, it has alot of fiber and helps things alot. Don't let it go a long time or it will get thick and need emptying again. You can do regular canned pumpkin not the (pumpkin pie filling already spiced) or some pet stores sell canned pumpkin dessert for dogs. It's called Natural Choice Healthy Dessert Pumpkin Crumble. It comes in a little 3oz can. It is made by Nutro however. Wild dogs would leave their scent this way but domesticated dogs eat a different diet and have no real reason to scent mark. So I guess our tame pups can have problems. |

Good thing I always have some in storage. I do add a little pumpkin in his food. As he is picky, he picks on the food that I cook for him and don't eat a lot of vege that I gave him even if I crush them, he sorta pick the spots...sigh...Now I am just worried about the side where nothing came out after squeezing as the vet said its feels big and the wall of the right side anal gland is thick but nothing comes out. The vet said have him on antibiotics and come back again in 3 weeks time to try that side again...The anal gland vet trip costs me $200..... |

If you don't feel you can express the glands yourself your groomer will do it for you cheaper than the vet. If there are issues then you should only let the vet do it. |

Thanks Ladymom. We'll keep track on his anal glands from now on since before he never had a problem. |
Chester has had anal glands issues before every so often I need to get them squezzed at the vet office, they do the internal glands not the external that the groomers do. I have to have chester on a food that has higher fiber in it, if they have higher fiber they have bigger poo and it emptys out their glands, which most dogs do on their own. Chester eats solid gold which is 4% fiber and other thigs like veggies can help with the fiber issue as well good luck |
