1 month old with CHF I have been reading on the forums about "Puppies" with enlarged hearts and fluid in the lungs. The "puppies turn out to be 10 to 15 year old "puppies" I would like to know if anyone has any experience with new born pups with CHF. I know an owner that has this 1 month old pup with an enlarged heart and fluid in its lungs. The vet put him on Lasix to help kidneys to remove the extra fluid, and is doing well. But i want to know if anyone has gone through this or knows anyone who has. With the Puppy being so young is there a chance the he can out grow this. the owner can not aford the medical cost and I have been footing the bill. How can I not help. I could not look him in the eyes and say nothing. I just want to know if anyone can give me an idea of what kind of fight we 3 are in for. |
This is a tricky question and one you should address with your vet. Depending on the cause of the chf he could live for a long time or if an arrithimia (sp) develops have a sudden death. Whatever the case he will need close monitoring by your vet |
I can't help your situation, but I can pray for all of you ....:hands::hands: |
I do not know what the prognosis or care would be in a puppy. My pom had CHF for 1 1/2 years and did very well on medicinem unfotunatley we lost her in February, with CHF they can do well for awhile and all of a sudded go down fast. That is so kind of you to help the owner out. Hopefully someone with experience with this will respond. Godd luck. |
thank you for your input. I"m just going out of my mind about this little guy. Best and worst case scenarios keep playing over and over in my mind. I will just have to wait and see what happens at the next vet apt. |
My little baby LoveBug puppy had CHF. She came home with us when she was 8 weeks old. We didn't know what it was at first. But from the first nite we had her, she coughed terribly Just at nite. I took her the very next day and vet started her on antibiotics. It was so strange she would play and act normal during the day with out other yorkies. But, then when nite came she would cough pittifully! Well after 3 rounds of antibiotics, 1 nite was really bad. I took her in first thing that morning. She was so pittiful with nasal drainage and just being exhausted. The vet did a chest xray and stated she had Pneumonia but it was located in a really weird place and then she talked to the vet at the UT vet school and they dx with chf. They tried to start IV to give her lasix to relieve the fluid. But, couldn't get it on her little barely 1pd baby. We had to rush her to the Vet emergency at UT. They jerked her from me and took her to the back... Stated they would be doing more xrays, iv and monitor little LoveBug (we called her LoveBuggy). This was around 6 or 7 pm. They called around midnite and stated she was doing better and had ate and was playing a little. Then, around 6 am the doctor called and stated she had a massive seizure and passed away. She was only 3 months old. But, from the first minute she had us wrapped around her little paw! This was the first time I had ever lost a baby. This was last year in February. We still had 7 little yorkies. My oldest Petree (the 1 who got this whole yorkie addiction started), was diagnosed a couple of years prior with CHF. She did really well just taking her lasix. Then in April last year also, she suddenly turned for the worst and we had to go thru it again. Needless to say last year was not good. I am sorry to have written a book here. I don't think anyone but the Lord knows the outcome. Hopefully, their baby will overcome it and be strong and healthy. You got to make the most of every minute! |
My Chloe had the same thing.......when she was 14 weeks old. And she outgew it!! Today she is one year old and is just fine. It was rough for the first few weeks and at times we thought we would lose her!! And there was trips to the vet and medications. We even had one vet that suggested that we put her down...........but we would not give up! But she is healthy, happy and has no ill effects from that horrible experience. |
aww so sad .. crying reading this thread *prayers* for the lil guy someone plz point me to the happy section ... :( |
Thank you both for shearing your stories. I'm so sorry about lovebug, my heart aches for you, for i too shear in your grief. Noha passed away last night, due to a pulmonary embolism. Vick, thank you for letting me know that there are happy ending as well. Give Chloe a belly rub for me please. |
Ahhh, I am so sorry the little guy didn't make it. My original thoughts were, that there must be something very wrong for a new born to have CHF and that maybe you should seek advise from a Cardiologist...So sad...RIP baby boy. |
I second the advice to see a vet cardiologist. My story: Scooter was 9 weeks old when we got him. We took hin to the vet for his checkup the next day and it was discovered that he had a heart murmur: vet said he might out grow it with time "let's see in a few weeks". Well the murmur got worse and we saw a vet cardiologist who did a cardiac ultrasound (cardiac echo with color flow) . It showed PDA (patent ductus arteriosis) when the pulmonary artery and the aorta did not separate connection at birth. They said without surgery he would go into CHF in time and not likely last more than a few months. He was placed on lasix to decrease the potential for lung backup and a most wonderful vet surgeon performed surgery on Scooter a week later. Immediately post-op he had a normal sounding/beating heart even though it was still alittle enlarged. Three months post-op his heart size was almost normal but functioning perferctly. The cardiologist said "if he wouldn't have had the surgery he would be buried in your back yard by now". I'm so thankful we gave Scooter a chance to live and I thank God for leading me to YT where i first heard that were even such things as cardiac vets. My refular vet never even mentioned this as an option at first. Scooter turned one yr old last January and he is full of energy. It was money well spent. Please seek out a vet cardiologist. At least find out what the cause of the CHF is and what your options are. There may be different causes of the CHF in a puppy. Don't just treat the symptoms of CHF, try to find out the cause as it might be something that can be reversed. |
I'm so sorry, I just saw that the little guy passed away. If our happy ending stories can help save another little one in the future it is always worth sharing. |
These stories are heartbreaking!!! My prayers go out to all of you..... |
