Got a question Tila got spayed yesterday. The vet did give her medication for the pain. I asked if there was anything I could give her later if she was any kind of pain. She told me I wouldn't need to because they gave her something already and that they don't really feel it as much the second day or later. But if she was feeling any pain I could give her half of a baby aspirin. I did a search on here and a lot of posts say not to give aspirin. So is there anything I can give her? Thank you. :) |
You can give aspirin, but not tylenol or ibuprofen. |
Thank you. |
Aspirin is just one of those things that some vets say is okay and some say no. It is okay to give but I would prefer something made for animals like Metacam. |
I know the vet said I can give her half of a baby aspirin, but I just don't feel comfortable giving it to her. She said half and on the bottle it says not to crush it or break it because the covering on it. Maybe it's just me, I'm a little weird and I spazz. lol. But it's almost 3 in the morning and I still awake, it's late. Tila is on the couch, sitting by me, her head is right by my ear, and she's doing her little whining thing, she doesn't really whine, she does this little grunting thing. I don't know what she wants. |

In all honesty, all human medicines are ok for pets (infact they give our dogs the same exact thing that we take) THE DIFFERENCE IS THE DOSE!!!! I have spoken to many different veterinarians and they have all said the same thing. JUST BE SAFE!!! |
I am going to have to disagree and say that not all human medicine is OK for dogs. The accedomeniphine in ibprofen can shut down a dog or cat's liver the 1st time they have it. That is NOT safe for animals! When Bella was spayed, the DR sent her home with 3 day of pain meds. I would suggest calling him and requesting something for her for the next day or so. That is probably your safest bet! Hope Tila starts to feel better soon! |
I would call your vet first thing in the morning and as for either metacam or rimadyl. I like Metacam better for these little guys because it's in liquid form. Never give tylenol to dogs or cats it is toxic. I have seen animals die from this. A half of a johnson and johnson baby asprin is ok but I would still be cautious because just like people our babies can have reactions to any meds. |
I'm gonna have to say that most human medications are NOT good for pets. There are some that people do use, but i personally would not. I've been a tech for years and have seen what has happened to pets when people give them human medications, whether its teh right dose or the wrong dose. Pet medication is NOT the same and i don't know why those vets said they were. if they were the same then rimadyl/deramaxx/metacam would be called aspirin/acetylsalicylic acid/ibuprofen/acetaminophen instead of the names stated or carprofen/deracoxib/meloxicam. As for the OPs baby, it really depends on the vets choice as to what they send their patients home with. Remember, mostly all they do is spays, neuters, dentals, and other small procedures. Most pets don't need pain meds for spay/neuter after the first day. Mine was sent home with rimadyl but i didnt give it to her because she didnt need it. However sometimes you will get the pet that is alittle more sensitive then others and may need pain meds. in this case i would call your vet and ask for metacam. I wouldn't give aspirin after a surgery becasue its a blood thinner and god forbid something happens and your baby needs to go back into surgery. on another note, antibiotics aren't needed after surgery either. they are given to appease the pet owner. the pet gets enough antibiotics during surgery or afterwards at the vet that they do not need anymore. most pet owners will freak out if they aren't sent home with ABs LOL i don't blame them because its just what everyone believes and hears. |

You can get it from your vet. :) |
Metacam is percription only, so the vet would have to give it to you. |
