HORRIBLE ALLERGIES!! Totally Congested - Any Advice? So... I posted this thread last week: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...t-problem.html I was concerned about a snorting problem Mia was having (which wasn't a backwards sneeze - it was different than normal). Took her to the vet, showed the vet the video. Vet took her temp and gave her a little exam and concluded that Mia has allergies and to get her some children’s Benadryl. It will be a week from our vet visit on Monday. The benadryl does nothing but make her a bit loopy and tired. And to be honest, I almost think it makes her worse. We went for a walk today and she did ok, just a few snorts and sneezes. Got home and decided to give her a little benadryl and she got so bad! She's SOOO completely congested that she can hardly breath out of her nose. Has horrible sneeze attacks and literally has snot flinging out of her nose. I know how I feel when I'm sick and can't breath out of my nose, but at least I can breath out of my mouth instead. :( I feel so bad and don't know what to do. First thing Monday morning I'll be getting her back into the vet, but I'm just looking for any advice in the meantime. Thanks in advance, Sara (and Mia :animal-pa) |
our gracie has the same problem and we tryed benedryl and found the same thing so our vet put her on Atopia 10mg they started working after about 4days and she has stopped sneezing and no itiching Gracie is only 3lbs so we have to shave off a bit of the pill and for the frist 3 days i gave her bendryl and the atopia just a thought |
I feel for you because Lilly has the same problems. I fear taking her out because of these exact problems. It makes me feel sooo bad. I took her out today and she's been awful ever since, her eyes are so goopy too. :( |
Horrible has turned into SEVERE............ Here I am at 1:30 a.m. wide awake because poor Mia can't sleep. She probably hasn't slept more than 15 min. at a time. I'm so sad for her. Looks like we may be going in to the pet E.R. Seems odd to go in and spend a ton of money for a congested nose - but I'm really not sure what to do. |

Any update? Poor girl, this sounds just awful. My Marcel is having seasonal allergies (track your pollen levels at pollen.com - helpful) and Benadryl doesn't really do much for him. I'm giving it 3xday for this next week or so, and if still no relief - I'm taking him here: Dermatology Clinic for Animals I noticed they also have a clinic in CA, so maybe if your vet can't help - a dermatologist would be the next step. |
Update - 7:15 a.m. and no change. At 2:00 a.m. I stood in a really hot shower with Mia for about 15 min. thinking the steam would help a bit, but unfortunately it did nothing. All three of us didn't get much sleep last night. I never thought allergies would be this bad! I'm going to take her outside in a sec to walk her around a bit to see if she'll clear up at all. As soon as 8 a.m. rolls around I'm going to call the vets cell number they provide on the vet offices answering machine. |
Hopefully a change in medication will help. Lady has horrible pollen allergies and can't take most veterinary antihistamines because of her seizure medications. My vet prescribed Zyrtec for her years ago and it works amazingly well. I have allergies myself and use air purifiers in the house. That helps her a lot. Remember, Mia is low to the ground so she is really inhaling the pollen. Pollen is worse in the morning so I avoid taking Lady out then (she's also pad trained). During the height of pollen season, its a good idea to give them a little foot bath when they come inside or at least wipe their paws off. |

She takes two kind sof seizure medications plus is diabetic, so if it's safe for her, it's gotta be safe for "normal" furbabies. ;) It's nice now that it is generic. I used to have to pay $80 for 30 pills! |
I wonder if she needs an antibiotic to clear it up....:confused: You know... like when people get a sinus infection... the only thing that clears it up is an antibiotic (since there is a infection going on...). I hope you find something that works for Mia. |
Maggie has severe allergies, so severe that she got an (unnecessary) ear surgery. When we moved to ABQ our vet here said that she should see a dermatologist and he put her on a food diet trial for 6 weeks. She get's ATOPICA to lessen her allergy symptoms and they help great! Maybe you could mention ATOPICA pills to your vet... Benadryl, Zyrtec, and other OTC medications did nothing for Maggie... Could you maybe use a Q-tip to gently remove some of the mucus from her nose? We'll pray that your precious fur baby will get relieve very very soon!!! |

i dont' know the solution, but i have a suggestion that might help with the allergy problem. maybe keep your baby indoors with air conditioning plus maybe an air filter. i think that might help. (dont' take her outdoors during allergy season, just play with her inside the house for excersice) i think that should be able to help improve her allergies symptoms. |
Update - Mia's congestion got so sever on Sunday, that I actually called the vet on her emergency weekend line. Turns out she has a bacterial infection. I knew it had to be more than just allergies, so it makes sense now. The vet asked what color the mucus was coming out of her nose - I said yellow and sometimes pink - and that's when she knew it wasn't allergies. She is on an antibiotic now and today is the first day she's had some energy. Hopefully she's back to her spunky little self soon! |

Sara - allergies Hi Sara, I have two yorkies with allergies. Millie has them so bad she has to have an allergy shot once a week. My other yorkie Polly is onAtopica. Both my babies get benedryl twice a day. At first, the benedryl makes them really sleepy, but then their bodies get used to it after awhile. If your baby is congested with mucus coming out, I think I'd go back to see the vet. It sounds like the allergies are really bad. Beverly, Millie, and Polly |

I'm thinking that maybe my yorkie has allergies. She has mucus coming out of her eyes. She blows air from her nose like she has mucus in her nose but I havent seen any draining from it. It makes me want to give her a tissue and say blow :rolleyes: Also ...she sneezes...not much and not often and she coughs like she is trying to cough up something and its stuck. All of this was at my friends home. But at home I havent heard her coughing and sneezing. Her eyes are still a little runny and gooey from yesterday. So...Im hoping that they clear up AND maybe I can find a natural remedy instead of allergy meds?:animal-pa |
