Mange..... Hello All, This is my first post on this website. I have a 7 1/2 month old male Yorkie. His name is Pierre and he is the love of my life... Well, long story short. My bf's golden retriever got mange from his roommates dog. He then passed it onto Pierre and my golden. Pierre had it on the tips of his ears. He has been itching for months. I thought he had an irritation from the groomers shaving his ears.... Now all three dogs have to wear cones for the next two months, take antibiotics every single day, and every two weeks needs a shot from the vet. Not only is this extremely pricey but it is completely breaking my heart. Pierre looks at me like I am punishing him by putting this cone on him. He is 4.5 lbs... I am surprised they even had a cone to fit on his little head. He is acting up... chewing on everything possible, barking a lot, and acting out of character. I guess that is his way of fighting back?? I guess the reason I am posting this is to see if there is anyone out there who has had to deal with mange. It is also contagious to humans so that makes me nervous. I still try to give him lots of love and kisses even though the darn cone gets in the way. He still tries to crawl under the covers with me, but cant... and he got stuck under the bed the first night he had it on. Any suggestions on how to cope with this and how to still keep him a happy and loved pup? It is going to be a long two months....... :( |
Ahhh...I am soooooooooo sorry - poor baby I wonder if you can put a baby onesie on him, or is the cone to stop him from scratching his head  What about benedryal - do you know if he can have that  |
Yes he can have benedryl but the cone is actually to prevent the spread of the mange. He still tries to itch the cone. My poor baby. :( I will have to take a pic of all three dogs with their cones and post it!! |
Can you wrap a cloth around the outside of his ears, leaving his ear canal open? what is the cone protecting him from? Do you have a picture or two you can post? |

I am just starting to figure out how this site works and I believe I added some pictures to my profile... but I will attach some to this message... |
Hey...can you use a Cat Cone instead  They are a bit mussy and it may be more comfortable :) |
4 Attachment(s) Cat cone... hmmm... I will have to look into that as well! Below are some additional pictures. Just so you all can visualize what mange could possibly look like if you pup gets it. If you notice on his eye brow area... that area has thinned a bit. And his ear.... what you see is mostly scabbing... but also the hair is missing a bit in that area. And lastly, Pierre was helping his Mommy pick pictures to post!! :):animal36 |
the also make a soft cone you could order instead of that hard plastic thing thats easier for them to wear jefferspet.com has them also are they doing the mange dips at the vet for them its stinks but makes a huge difference |

Thank you all for your posts and concern! :) Pierre seems to be doing much better. He is adjusting to the cone head and is very playful and happy. I took it off of him last night for a little bit. He just fell asleep in my arms and went to sleep as I was rubbing his tummy. Once he started itching I put it right back on him. This weekend he was able to play fetch. Took him a couple tries to try and fit the ball between his mouth and his cone. I also got him in the spa!! Here is Southern California it was very very hot. Turned the spa on to a comfortable temp and my bf and I helped him swim back and forth to us. That was really his first swimming experience. He did great. I think he may have actually liked it!! Must say though, my golden retriever was a bit jealous!! She is a bit too big to fit into the spa. Haha. I hope everyone had a great weekend! |
is the mange just on his ears and head area? if so, the cone is probably to prevent him from scratch his head and then spreading it to other parts of his body which is why it needs to stay on all the time. what type of mange does he have? |

And it is sarcoptic mange.... It makes me laugh when we play fetch... he can only see straight ahead so if the ball goes out of his line of sight he basically runs in circles or random places looking for it. Poor little guy!! :aimeeyork |
At the store I work in we sell Comfy Cones. They are soft and comfortable. You should look them up and they come in tiny sizes :D good luck with the mange. Our shar pei had it when she was little :( |

i'd keep the plastic cone he has on now, and not worry about other ones. he'll adapt. they all do. its long enough to protect his ears against his feet scratching them |
