Baxter's Sick and I need Advice about best food..... What a day...this AM when husband came home from work I let all 3 pups outside to welcome him home, and hubby noticed Baxter peed blood. I took him to the vet, and they ran some tests and said he had kidney stones. He has surgery scheduled for Tuesday AM, and in the meantime he has to take some antiobiotics (sorry i don't know the name of them...husband has the prescription, I am writing this from work). The vet said this is usually caused from too much magnesium in the diet. I feed Grammy's pot pie kibble and and variety of Merrick canned food on top it. I neede som advice on a healthy low-magnesium food, all I can figure out so far is I need to switch to just canned (which my pack will love anyway) I feel so sad and and bad for my baby. I really just want to be at home right now with him, and feel guilty that I may have been feeding him the wrong food. Amy |
Has your vet suggested a prescription diet like Hills K/D? Prescription Diet: Therapeutic Pet Food for Cats and Dogs | Hill's Pet Nutrition |
I took Baxter in this AM, and the vet was late because he got bit by a wild cat (YES).....I waited as long as I could, but had to be at work because my boss is having surgery today. So I left husband there and of course he did not get all the info I wanted. |
I know that reason is what I was told regarding my cats and crystals. I wasn't aware that this affected dogs in this manner also. You need to seek out foods specifically labeled for urinary tract health. I know in cat food...seafood products are off the menu. Found this site with a quick search on google.... My 12 year old Puppers had diarrhea and was throwing up after eating a ham bone. Last night along with the diarrhea, she passed a lot of blood. She is on her way to recovery, but the Vet told me to give her 1/4 cup of chicken cut up fine mixed with 1 cup of white rice. But just feed her 1/4 cup of the mixture. She only weighs 8 lbs. She is also on an antibiotic twice a day. I don't know if that would be good for Baxter, but I thought I would let you know what my Vet told me. Good Luck |
i wouldn't switch to another store bought food since Baxter is going to be going into surgery. With the surgery the vet will be removing all the stones then he will be sending these stones out to the lab. the lab will verify what kind of stones these are. There are two types. His diet will need to be changed based on this information to a prescription food provided by your vet. unfortunately teh test results do take a long time to come back so i would ask your vet if he thinks teh switch to prescription food should be done before the results come back. you can also find information from a vet nutritionist about the type of homecooked diet you can feed him. |
Thank you everyone for your advice. I am keeping him n the same food until I get to talk to the vet tomorrow. Baxter seems to be in good spirits, but I am worried to death about his surgery...everyone please pray for my baby. |
Oh surgery is always a big worry for us, isn't it? Sending prayers for Baxter and his momma. |
I will keep Baxter in my prayers |
