OK so she ia 4 and a half months old. First we researched her condition a little more and we gave her some nutri stat and some different types of sugar. When i talk to the breeder he said to try vanilla ice cream because at this point she wasnt drinking anything either so we had to hydrate and watch the sugar level. About 20 mins later Jade(puppy) was running around but her equilibrium still looked lke it was off. We called the 24 hour vet hospital and they said to let her nap but only with a close watch. So we keep checking on her every 10-15 mins making sure her response were ok. After about 4 hours we left her rest up through the night, and now our baby seems to be doing great. Things got a little scary last night and i just wanted to thank everyone. The breeder also said that up until she is 6 months old she can have diz spells that typically last 4-7 days. When that happens we are supposed to give her some sugar and some r and r. Anyhow we are giving her some vitamins daily for a while and then we will go from there.....Thanks |
Your breeder may be thinking about hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, but the episodes don't last 4-7 days, in fact, an episode should be over within 20 minutes of given Nutri Stat. Nutri Stat and other similar products temporarily raise the blood sugar so that the appetite will return, but it's important to give protein at this point because that helps stabilize the blood sugar, and keeps it from going up and down. Many people free feed so that food is available 24/7, and a dog won't get overly hungry and experience low blood sugar. If a dog is experiencing frequent low blood sugar, tests should be made to rule out an underlying infection. Dizzy spells that last 4-7 days sound more like liver shunt and a bile acid test should be performed. Please get your dog checked by a vet, the sooner you find the problem the sooner you can treat it. By the way, giving a vitamin will not help at all, and could do your dog more harm than good if you are using human vitamins. |
