Dexamethasone My vet prescribed Dexamethasone to my yorkie, Emmitt, today. He thinks he may have an inner ear problem, or another neurological problem that is causing balance issues. Does anyone have any information about this medication? I know it's a steriod, but other than that, I'm in the dark. Thanks. |
I don't have any info on the drug your baby is taking but wanted to welcome you. There are so many great people on this site - I know someone will have the info you need. They have been just great for me! harley's mom |
I'm happy to have found a group who loves their 'babies' as much as I do! Hopefully, Emmitt will be feeling better soon, so I can enjoy hearing about everyone and share my stories. |
Hi, It is an anti-inflammatory. This is what I found: Dexamethasone Dexamethasone is used in the treatment of myositis, arthritis, dermatitis, allergies and supportive therapy in all animals. Can be used to treat various cancers, respiratory diseases, liver disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, and skin disorders. An effective glucocorticoid, a hormone related to cortisone. It suppresses the immune system, reduces inflammation throughout the body, but effects on nervous system are limited. Drug Side Effects: May retard growth to young animals. Can cause dull coat, weight gain, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal ulcers, depression, lethargy and viciousness. http://www.petcarerx.com/affiliate_p...pdp=1&upsd=101 |
Thank you... Your information is very helpful. Thankfully, Emmitt is feeling much better and has not exhibited any of the side effects associated with this med. Our plan is for him to take the meds for another 6 days, then gradually take him off to see if his symptoms reappear. Best case - he'll be all better and not require meds long-term. |
Welcome to YT, Buckaroomom ... sorry, just saw your post!! Hope your little Emmitt is feeling better! I know that medication is wonderful and healing for our babies but I just hate it when Toto has to take any! Hopefully, your little one will be back on track soon!! Please keep us updated! Again, welcome and we are looking forward to hearing all about Emmitt and seeing pictures! ;) |
I'm glad I could help. I just hope your baby is all better soon! :) |
Hi and welcome to YT!! I was wondering what his symptoms were because my daughter's yorkie was acting neurologically challenged last week and was hospitalized with possible liver shunt which they ruled out but he was having trouble walking and keeping his balance, falling over and. although, he was alert his movements were spastic and uncoordinated. |
Liver When his blood was tested, Emmitt's liver function checked out fine, so that was ruled out. He's been on the meds and doing well. We're down to a pill every other day, and he is not showing any symptoms, so I'm cautiously optomistic that it was some kind of inner ear inflamation that was easily fixed with the meds, and that it will not require long-term medication. His symptoms sound a lot like your daughter's pup. |
