Open Wound on Tatum's Back??? 4 Attachment(s) A little while ago I was petting Tatum and I felt a bump on her back. It is on her back, over a little ways, on the right side of her spine. I parted the hair to get a closer look and I saw that it was actually an open wound  It was bleeding a little, but not terrible or anything. I put some Pulvex (an Antiseptic Ointment, similar to Bag Balm) on it with a Q-tip and started her back on Antibiotic (Clavamox) - just to prevent infection should it arise. Has anyone here ever seen anything like this? (Pictures are below). Any idea what it might be? I am completely clueless  It is like a small open wound - almost like her skin is splitting   What next!! I don't need anymore problems with her! My poor little angel baby  When we were on our way out of town to take her for her LP surgery we had to of course stop and let her go potty (we usually stopped at gas stations, where there was grass) and we found a couple of fleas on her    I have never in my entire LIFE seen a flea on her! AHHH!! But it was only 2 (we checked her over really well, multiple times) and 2 is all there was. I just don't see how this could have anything to do with only 2 little fleas being on her though - and we got them right off and killed them  Then there is the thought of her surgery - did they give her some kind of shot there? Or could it have anything to do with when they took blood or did the Thyroid test on her? I will have to mention this to her surgeon tomorrow when we go back to see him. But anyway, if anyone here has any input, I would greatly appreciate it. |
Not sure, could be from an IV or shot. Hmmmmmm, it does look like a type of spot that I have seen on the Mini schnauzer that we used to have. She was allergic to Grass..:eek::eek:. I used an oatmeal spray on it. We got it at the vet. I think you can by a regular ointment for abrasions that will probably work also....... does it seem to be warm? If so, I would try the oatmeal spray. Sorry, but I don't remember the brand name of it. Poor little gal..... hope it ain't bothering her. |
has she been biting at that area? It could be an allergic reaction to the fleas, ESP if she's been biting at it. A lot of dogs are really allergic to fleas and one bite will make them itchy for about a week and they can get little sores from it |
whatever it is it looks nice and clean. perhaps during her surgery (which most times they're on their back for) she scraped it, it scabbed up and now the scab fell off. she's been on an antibiotic and you're going back tomorrow so I don't think I'd worry. |
Could she be scratching with her front paws and maybe have got it with her nails. If you have the email to the Dr's office I would email the pictures tonight and then they will have a chance to look at them before you bring her in. I hope everything is ok and you have a great Dr. visit tommorrow |
is it deep like something punctured her? from the picture it looks like a scab that fell off that hasn't completely healed underneath  it doesn't look infected or anything to me.. would it hurt to clean it with some bactine? you should keep an eye to see if she tries to chew at the area or scratch it. poor little tat! she's such a trooper though :) |
Poor Tatum! It could be from an IV site or an injection site. Hope it heals fast. |

Oatmeal spray...that sounds FABULOUS. Thank you soo much for mentioning this...sounds PERFECT for her as she has terrible allergies and it will probably help soothe her with her itching. I am going to look online and if I can't find anything I will mention it to her surgeon tomorrow and see if they carry anything like that. Wonder if Petco would have something like this? Of course I would want it to be all natural and not filled with chemicals where Oatmeal is listed LAST (or close to last) on the ingredient label  I'll check it out though - thanks a ton girl! :D |

Thanks so much Patti...you are a sweetheart! |
I\'m glad Tatum\'s going to be looked at today. Bless her heart - she\'s had a time of it lately, hasn\'t she? The wound looks small and clean though, so that\'s a good thing. The only experience I have with anything like that was when Lucy tried to slide under my coffee table and hit the top of a little screw that holds something on there. She had a little nick that reminds me of Tatum\'s. I cleaned it well and used a cortisone spray that I\'d gotten from the vet for something else. It cleared up in a couple of days. Good luck with Tate Tate\'s vet visit today - please let us know what the verdict is. |
Just checking in to see how Tatum did at the vets today. Hope all went well. |
