Help - Sick Puppy Good Morning Yorkie Talkers, I am hoping someone can offer me some advice for SophieKate. She has been up since 3:30 this morning (along with me) having problems with severe diarrhea. SophieKate is going on the average of every two hours, not a lot but of course at this point there is probably not a lot of food left in her little body. I have been researching and so far I have taken her completely off food and have been making sure she is drinking. I have sent her Dad out to get her some canned pumpkin (no sugar or spices) and I just made her a small scrambled egg because the poor little thing was so hungry. I have checked and there is no blood and she is not bleeding from her little butt area. Besides having diarrhea SophieKate appears to be fine, she is active, running around playing with the cat and barking at me for attention all which is normal morning routine. She hasn't had any recent diet changes and was at the Vet on Friday for her allergies. She is not on any medication and has not had her heartworm pill yet this month (due on Tuesday). Please tell me am I missing anything? I am so worried about her and want to make sure I am doing the right thing for her. Usually SophieKate is so healthy and has only been sick once, when I first got her she had serve Kennel Cough which turned into Pneumonia. Any advice or guidance is much appreciated. I apologize to those who read the same post under the Health and Diet section, I posted it there by mistake. Thank you, Cheryl and SophieKate. |
Sorry I can't give you any advice except banannas is a binder. Hope Sophie gets to better. |
Hi Cheryl, Happy Holiday, I would get her to the vet. She needs to be checked, but in the meantime you need to buy some pedialyte for dehydration. Keep her hydrated. Offer her some plain rice and boiled chicken no skin. I would also take a stool sample to the vet. Good Luck and hope Sophie Kate feels better. Lissette |
Because small dogs can dehydrate very quickly and water isn't enough, she needs to see the vet. |

Thank you all for the advice, we just got back from the Emergency Vet. SophieKate has a case of Giardia and being treated is an antibiotic and something to relax her tummy. I was able to get a stool sample and the ER Vet test that along with her blood to make sure she did not have any infection(s). No Fever and her lungs are clear - just a bad upset tummy. Also, she is on prescription food for awhile and is the vet does not want her around other dogs. I will be calling her regular vet tomorrow morning to check in and tell her exactly what the ER Vet found. Again, thank you all for your advice. Cheryl |
I am glad you took her to the vets. How old is SophieKate? She should be just fine now that you know what is wrong and she is on medication. I have never had a dog get guardia but I see on YT lots of dogs get it. I hear they get it from contaminated water. Does SophieKate go outside? I was just wondering if you know how she got it? I pray she will continue to improve. |

Giardia canis in Dogs It is can also be transmitted to humans so disinfect everything and wash your hands constantly. |
SophieKate is 10 months old and yes she goes outside, on a leash for walks. She also goes to dog parks, or should I say went to dog parks - I am reconsidering after this. Poor SophieKate, she will not take the pills I am fighting with her constantly to get one in her. I have tried every trick known to man and she always outsmarts me. I am exhausted from being up all night with her and she is exhausted from being up all night. I am calling my Vet first thing in the morning to get some other form of the meds. This is the same problem we had with the Kennel Cough, I could not get her to take her meds and she was out smarting me and spitting out the pills -hence the pneumonia. |

I am glad you got her in today!! Hopefully she will feel better real soon. |
I have found that the Natural Balance Dog Food Rolls are great for when you need to give a pill. Just cut off a small chunk and hide the pill in it. My dogs love the Lamb and Rice Rolls or at Petsmart the Pet Botanic rolls. |
Im glad you took her in, what a good mommy you are. |
We finally got two pills in her about 9:00 pm this evening. It took three adults to get two pills into the mouth of a 7 lbs Yorkie YIKES!!! I am happy for the evening, at least she has her meds and ate some rice and the prescription dog food. When she feels better I need to start figuring out a plan for training her to take pills (or fooling her to take pills). I just washed all the our bedding and cleaned out SophieKates crate. Right now I have her blankets and lambs wool pad in the washer. Also cleaned all her bowls, the water bowls and threw in the cat dishes for good measure. I want this stuff gone ASAP, my poor baby is exhausted and really needs to feel better soon. Before we go to bed I am going to wipe her down with baby wipes, the poor little girl does not smell to good. I know from when she was spayed that the wipes help calm her down. I guess it is a good sign she is running around attempting to pick on the cat. Thank you all again for you advice and encouragement. I am calling my Vet first thing in the morning, I want her opinion on the ER Vets findings. |
Oh no Cheryl!!! Poor Sophiekate, I hope she recovers from this quickly. Also, I am sooooo happy you got her to the vet asap. Last year Ranger got sick and after having 3 bouts of diarrhea got severely dehydrated and ended up in the ER for a night, it was awful! Please give Sophiekate tons of kisses from Ranger and Ryder. Also, as both mine are currently on various medication, I have found peanut butter to be the best way to disguise medication. :p |
I am glad you got the pills down Sophiekate. I hope she is doing much better this morning. From what I have read they have to stay on medication for quite awhile. Hopefully you can find a trickier way to get the pills down her. Prays go out for a speedy recovery. |
Very ill little puppy hya, im new to this site, i have an 8 week old little boy called marley,, yday out of no where he started falling and going dizzy, he has been sick twice, and cant really poo, he is very sleepy,, anyone no what is wrong ?? please help x x Marley-Moo Xx |
Hi, I am not a Yorkie expert by any means but have you got Nutracal? From what I know Yorkie babys can get hypoglycemic very easily and you need to giving this to him. I would suggest you open a new thread, there are a lot of really helpful and nice people who can give you advice. Of course the one question I have is have you taken Marley to a Vet? 8 weeks is pretty young and you may want to get him to a Vet ASAP. |
Just a quick update this morning. We had hard poop YAY!!!! that has be a good sign. We are going to see our Vet at 10:30 am, she seems to be improving but I want her doctor to see her and take over treatment from here. SophieKate is far to important member of our family for me not to take her to her doctor and get her the best care. Thank you all again for your help and advice, as I said before I would never have gotten this far with Sophie Kate without the help of the fine Yorkie Talk members. |
