Need some advice about Baron's skin! Okay, I figured I'd start a new thread for a new problem. This is about Baron (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...tion-help.html) His hair started falling out around his bum, and then a little on his back and the base of his ears. I took him to the vet, she said it was a fungal infection (since he'd been on antibiotics). I have been giving him baths with a sulfurated lime solution, but his hair is still falling out, slowly, but falling out. Since this problem started, he has had no skin irriation, no redness or sores of any kind. So, here are my questions: 1) Is the diagnosis right? My vet is out of town until May 1st, and I really don't want to take him to another vet unless I really need to. I was thinking it may be a nutrition problem since he was so sick for a while, but he has been eating well for a few weeks now (Royal Canin Mini Puppy 33). 2) If it is a fungal infection, how long until his hair stops falling out? I have been giving him bi-weekly sulfur baths for (I think) 2 weks now. Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can give me~! :) |
I am going thru the same thing. although it's not fungal it's allergies. SHe also got a staph infection from itching all the time. She is missing her hair on her back, and on the inside of both back legs, She looks just pittyfull. I was wondering when her hair was going to grow back too...... She got 2 shots and the itching has all but gone but her hair is so thin . How did your vet. determine it was fungal. I know this isn't helpful but I thought I'd let you know your not alone. <>< |
That's true, how did your vet diagnose Baron with a fungal infection, was a scraping or culture done? |

The only real way to treat properly is to grow out a fungal culture - which takes 10-14 days; could be ringworm -- if it is, you may want to do 6-8 wks of oral diflucan. I'd reallllly get a culture though, bc otherwise how do you know what you're doing is effective against whatever bug/fungus this is, ya know? :) |
That is what I was thinking too:confused: The did not rule out any other possible causes < DId not even do a skin scraping? I am not fond of guessing whe it comes to a pets health, especially a skin condition , there are so many possibilities. I no you don't want to go to a different vet however, a second opinion is wise in you dogs case. Baron is not getting any better. Take him to a vet for a second opinion. |

Anyway, $150 later, haha, I have medicated shampoo for him and the vet did a scraping of his skin. There are no parasites, but he is going to do a fungal culture, which will take 2 weeks to come back. If that comes back negative, then we will move on to a skin biopsy. Basically, if it isn’t yeast or another fungus, then it could be something genetic. So, I’ll keep you posted. : ) Here are some pics of Baron. I can't remember which pones I uploaded last, biut these are the newest ones. Poor guy, he looks so bad, but I still think he's adorable! I'll also post one of what he USED to look like. You can tell the =difference the most on his face (his nose for sure). |

Okay, and there is a new "symptom" that I forgot to mention - He has two nails (one on each back paw) that has turned white and broken off (basically, the nail is thin, white/clear and only covers the little bit of flesh that goes in to the nail). Has anyone seen anything like that before? It is "spreading". He had one that I noticed about 3 days ago, and I honestly couldn't remember if he had a white toenail or not, and since his hair is gone on his foot, I couldn't tell if he had a white patch on a toe, so, I thought I'd just make a note of it. Yesterday, he had another nail that is now white/clear, and I know for a fact that it was only one toe the other day. I can't seem to find anything online about it (and, BTW, I did mention it to the vet, but he didn't say anything about it). |
Gosh, it sure sounds like a fungus...yes, it can spread to the nails. Poor little guy, is he still too small to take oral anti-fungal medications? |

Baron Well, the doc didn't mention anything about his size being an issue, but he did give me a medicated shampoo that is target to destroy common fungi and yeast. I guess I'll just have to wait for the culture results to see if anything else needs to be done. But, the nail issue hasn't spread since I have him a bath with the medicated shampoo. So, that's a positive sign. : ) |

OKay, baron was supposed to go to the vet tomorrow, so I called them today about his culture results. So far, nothing has grown. They said it could take up to a month. But, I am FREAKING out about other possible causes, though, the vet says it's not time to worry, yet. Anyway, the medicated shampoo has helped tremendously! His hair is growing back! His skin is covered again! And, there are no hairless patches anywhere! No more nails have turned white or fallen off, and at the root of his 2 little white nails, the back is coming back! So, we are not going to the vet tomorrow since he is doing much better. But, they are going to call me if anything does grow, and if it doesn't, we are going in at the end of next week. |
That is great news! What kind of shampoo did you use? Taylor is doing much better too, until yesterday.... For about a week no scratching and then yesterday she started again. I have drilled all the family members to see if they gave her a bite of something and they all said NO.... maybe I'll try the shampoo..... Tami <>< |

Then, I give him a bath with the medicated shampoo and just rub it in him for about 10 minutes then rinse it off. It seems to be doing the trick. I am assuming that he actually did have a fungal infection, though the culture hasn't grown yet. And, though my vet was probably right in her initial diagnosis, the treatment she suggested was not helpful. |
I was wondering how Baron was getting along, sounds like good progress to me...YEA!!! I wonder if the culture isn't showing anything because he has been on the medicated shampoo for awhile now. I just hope he continues to improve and never has this come back again. Baron we love you!!! |
Allergies I don't know too much about the fungal infections, but I do know that Chamomile tea works great for allergies. Bathe the dog as usual rinse well and pour the tea over them like a rinse. Don't worry about getting it in eyes or mouth, it's not toxic.In fact you can use it as eye rinse for irritated eyes, and its also good for relieving gas and belly aches.Anyway don't rinse it off after you pour it on the dog, just dry as usual. I use a gallon milk jug, steep 4 or 5 tea bags and mix with water in milk jug and just pour it on. |
Update 3 Attachment(s) Baron is doing well. No word on the culture results yet. I'll call on Friday if I don't hear anything from the vet. His hair is growing back though, and he is healthy as an ox. He has actually figured out how to go up and down the stairs! it took him only a couple of days once he actually tried (usually he looks up at them like "there's no way."). Here he is! |
Update Wow, it has been a long time! I have been super busy! Anyway, the skin scraping FINALLY came back (like a month ago). Micro sporum Canis - ringworm! But, the miconazone shampoo got rid of it and his hair is gorwing in great and he is just as cute as ever! |
