Lonely yorkie I was wondering if anyone has advice of comforting a yorkie when a loved one has passed away. His brother and sister, both cocker spaniels, are elderly and ill. I made the tough decision to have them euthanized this weekend. At their age, I didn't feel confident in getting them treatment. :( Right now I'm contemplating if I can handle staying in the room in their last moments, how to tell Rico. Any ideas? The closer it gets, the more emotional I feel. Thankfully, I'm able to hide it when I'm around them. I'm just giving Duke and Brandy attention before they go. Please keep me in your prayers. Thanks. |
I am so sorry you're having to make this difficult decision. My sympathies on the loss of your babies. I know this solution isn't for everyone, but I would recommend another playmate for your yorkie. This will give him somewhere to direct his affection and will occupy his time in a fun way. Good luck. |

I agree, though it isn't the right choice for everyone. So sorry about your babies. I pray that you will have peace in your grief. |
My sympathies to you for having to make such a tough decision. A playmate will probably be a good idea but I I have always heard about problems with the new dog when people bring a new dog home when your still grieving. |
Awww, it's a tough decision that you've made and my sympathies go out to you. Love your baby and see how it goes. You will find a lot of comfort in each other. |
I'm so sorry you're going through this:( I have no advice, though. Extra loving is the only thing I can think of. Hugs to you and yours:girl_hug: |
Im so sorry you are having to make this decision. I would bring a blanket and wrap them in it while they are at the vets. Make sure you bring that scent home and let your little Yorkie sniff. He will know. Also some vets will come to your home and do this procedure.Good Luck with this and I would be there and comfort them. My Angus Passed away in my arms and my husband and daughter were holding his head. He took his last breath with us holding him...It very peaceful. |
So sorry for what you are going through. I put my had to put my 2 yorkies to sleep within weeks of each other so i may be able to offer some insight on 2 questions. My female had to be put to sleep first due to sudden heart issues. Our remaining yorkie was 17 and we knew he would have issues with her gone. I made a huge mistake having my carpet cleaned within 2 weeks of her passing. Losing her scent was devastating to him. Leave things around that contain their scent. Second, while it may be hard, I cant express the importance for your pets to be with them as they slowly drift off to sleep. You be with them for them, not for you. The process is peaceful, especially if they have a pre-relaxing shot in which you can spend some time with them as they are sleepy. The euthanasia takes only about 30 seconds. I feel so much better knowing I was with them until the end, even though it was hard for me. Leaving them without being there is just as hard, so think about what would be most comforting to them. I put my collie to sleep without being there. I always regretted it. |
When my Uncle had to put his ederly poodle to sleep the Vet had him bring the other dog with him. After Eve was gone they brought Pearl into the room. She sniffed Eve and walked away. She new she was gone. The Vet felt this was very important for Pearl otherwise she would always be looking for Eve, but they can tell when they are no longer there by smell.I am sorry you are going through this. |
So sorry you are having to go through this. When my son was 10 he and I had to make the decision to put our precious Kizzie to sleep. Together we went to the vet. They asked what we wanted to be seen for, I told them as quietly as I could why we were there. Tyler was already shedding tears, she said ok let me take her we will call you. I said no, we will stay with her. Together Tyler and I held her and told her how grateful we were to her for always loving us and making us laugh. We said an Our Father the vet joined in, we held her together in a blanket and talked to her as she drifted away. It was very peaceful I have no regrets staying with her or allowing Tyler to stay too. I owed that little dear dog so much. 14 years later two weeks ago this Saturday. Tyler had to do the same thing again....with our Chobee. Tyler held him too and stayed with and loved him as he drifted off to sleep. I am not telling you what to do only telling you about our experience and letting you know what ever you decide will be okay. I think the blanket idea with the smell of the dogs for your furbaby at home is a good idea. Take care. |
I am so sorry to hear that you have to make this decision. I know that is very hard to do. I agree with those before me who wanted to be there for their little ones. We were there this past January with our little girl as she left us. We kept holding her and telling her how much we loved her. Her brother spent a few weeks avoiding me completely and I think it was showing me he was mad at me for taking his sister away from him like that. I carried her out to the car that morning. He walked around lost until we brought his little brother home. Having a playmate is good for them but not until you feel you are ready to share your heart again. Hugs from us to you. |
