Chloe having surgery next week help! Hello Everyone! My sweet Chloe will get spayed next week, anything I should know besides what the vet is saying...This will be a first for me, not sure what to expect.... Thank you! :aimeeyork Chloe's momma :aimeeyork |
Sophie was spayed on March 10th. Her first evening home she slept most of the time. She (Vet recommendation) got double dose of her pain meds. Then regular dose each night before bed until she felt better. She got it the second night as most of the day she just slept and didn't move around too much. The third day she was out chasing the cats and being herself. I didn't give pain meds that night thinking she was fine, but she woke up about Midnight and I could tell she was uncomfortable. Gave her some meds and she went right back to sleep. Next day she was fine and back to normal from there. She did urinate a lot more, so all the hard work at potty training went out the window. May want to look at taking her to pee every 1 to 1.5 hours again (once she gets over the sleepy day or two). This did come around, but she did slip back on her potty training a bit and we are back to square 4 out of 6 and slowly working our way back up. Stitches came out two weeks later and all was well. I did opt for all the pre-testing. I also assured that my Vet monitored heart rate, BP and H2O, which she did. I also made sure she used Iso for her anesthesia. She was pre tested for allergy to anesthesia and all types of enzyme levels too. In the end her spay went from $185 to $428 but my piece of mind was priceless! Oh, she also had 4 teeth pulled. Those were the only baby teeth remaining. Good luck, she'll do just fine! :animal36 |

What type of anesthesia is the vet using? Is preop blood work being done and an IV placed? Is surgery going to be done on a heated surface? |

Honestly, some vets still use outdated anesthetic protocol that isn't at all safe. Small breeds loose body heat quickly, so surgery should be done on a heated surface. If an emergency comes up mid-spay, there isn't much time to put an IV in then. It should be placed before surgery and it is good to give fluids anyway. Preop blood work just shows if the liver and kidneys are functioning properly and if there is any infection, etc. Adding a bile acids test would be a more in depth check of liver function and is very good to do. |
Thank you for your responses The Vet hasn't said anything to me, I called yesterday to see if i need to do anything to prepared her and they said no, she should be fine. I have her at a wellness program at PetsMart, I dont know if any of u are familiar with that...I dont know what to do? I will call again and ask questions. Yes, please! cancel that appointment and find another Vet...ASAP! Gosh there was so much to go into for Sophie. All kinds of test, some optional, some not. And of course, the fasting. Sophie was allowed water, but absolutely no food. Good luck!:animal-pa |
