Allergies I took Taylor to the vet last night, after she had a bath I noticed how much hair she was missing. I thought it might be mange or mites. Thankfully it's neither but she has sever allergies, and the scratching gave her a staph infection. I have looked to see what allergies were common in Yorkies but I really didn't find anything. Does anyone here deal with this. |

I would start by adding an omega fatty acid oil to her food, such as Grizzly Salmon Oil. The correct fatty acid ratio will calm down the immune response and is a natural strong anti-inflammitory. That should help a lot. From there, there are many options to consider. What did your vet recommend? |
He gave her a shot of an antibiotic which lasts for 14 days, and a cortizone shot. Her rash on her legs is just about gone, It was really bad 24 hours ago. So it must be working. I am feeding her Fromm Duck and sweet potato. I just started adding Seameal from solid gold. 1/4 teasp. 2 times a day. She looks so pathetic, like she's had chemo. or something. |
where would I get Grizzley Salmon oil? |
Poor thing!! How old is she? What was she eating before? Has she had problems before? What are her symptoms besides hair loss and itching? Also, you can get the Grizzly Salmon Oil (not the only kind but I do like it) at most pet stores.. I *think* I saw it at Petco the other day, but since I have been to every pet store in my area getting ready for Ranger's surgery, it may not have been there. You could google or search petco/petsmart. I feel so bad for your baby! |
She's just under 6 months old. Never had anything like this before. When I first got her she was on Royal Canin, but the people in the yorkie club I belong to suggested I change to Fromm. She hasn't had any problem until she got bit by a flea, and it's been down hill from then |

Oh, I do know that I recently saw a thread about coconut oil for fleas... if we ever had problems with that, I would use the coconut oil in a second. It is extremely soothing and good for the skin. I hope you get some answers soon. |
I think that flea bite started it and any thing that she might have a mild allergy against is just making it worse. Just my idea though......... I will look for the oil. |
When the body reacts to an allergen, the immune responses freak out, so anything else that may be a possible allergen will further increase the response. So yes, it seems that if you can get the response to the flea controlled, the rest of the immune system will calm down and she should be back to normal! Poor girl!! |
That is what I thought...... so I guess I will just try to keep her away from everything, :(. She seems to be acting fine. She's not lethargic or mopey at all. That might be better if she was:rolleyes: She loves playing outside with my basset hound and lab. I just started her on Comfortis. But I am going to get some front line and put that on her topically. ANy other suggestions would be great ! |

Just wondering if the comfortis had helped with the allergies? |
Well the Comfortis help with no fleas, but were still battling the allergies, I just had to the groomer, he gave her a Schnauzer cut to blend in the hair. SHe looks so adorable! My kids are calling her a "POSER" I told her she looks like a snorkey.... Her under belly just broke out again, she was playing in the yard with her basset brother. I put some Caldensen powder on it. It took most of the redness away but the bumps are back.. AHAHAH I hope she out grows this ! |

If you continue to struggle w/ this, I honestly would say to go to a Dermatologist - it's what I had to do to get things properly diagnosed. Skin issues are complicated and confusing - so sometimes you do need an expert, rather than a generalist. |
