My Yorkie gets Car Sick My husband and I enjoy taking our Puppy with us on trips but anything more then a 30 minute ride makes him queasy. Does anyone know any options to treat his motion sickness so he's not throwing up in the car. I just hate to see him get ill and I want to see him enjoy our trips and dread them. :aimeeyork |
Childrens' Benadryl can help. Some people give ginger, or ginger cookies. There is one more med...argh...what is the name? Anyone? Well, someone will post it. |
How much children's Ben should I use though, My puppy is only about 3.5lbs. |
I like ginger snap cookies...They seem to work on road trips... |
:yeahthat:Thank You for this thread! i have used the advice I have read b4 about no big meals before leaving, etc. Not working. Poor Daisy Mae just tossed her cookies the whole trip we took last Sunday. We wer only gone for about 4 hours and left her in a big crate in the backseat so that she wasn't nervous and made many stops to let her out for potty and running, but just didn't work. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I am definetly going to try them all. ~Kathy:animal-pa |
wow some pretty good advice, i will definitely try the ginger snaps, But one question, I thought you were not suppose to give sweet to a dog? what if i made Ginger snaps at home and baked it with Splenda? |
Someone on another thread mentioned that they gave their dog Bonine. It's a motion sickness medication for people. I take it. Check with your vet for the quantity to give. You can buy it at most Walgreens, CVCs, etc. It doesn't make them sleepy, but works very well. |
My little one is the same exact way. Bella was perscribed Cerenia for her car sickness and I have had fairly good resutls. But I'd perfer to try more natural methods. |
A "strange" suggestion maybe OK, at the risk of everyone thinking I am off my rocker, I am going to tell you what my sister's family does for car sickness. I don't know if it would work for dogs, but I think it might. My sister has 8 children. Half of those kids get car sick, so all of them can not sit up front on trips. My brother-in-law is one of those really smart people that knows stuff we will never understand. He is some kind of an engineer or something. He flies around the world doing consulting. Anyway, he believes that car sickness has something to do with the vibration or something in the frame of the car. (He didn't use the word vibration, but that is what I got from the conversation.) He, without telling anyone in the van, decided to experiment with putting a heavy chain on the bumper of the van that would touch the ground when everyone was in the van. They took off from Texas to go to New Mexico and nobody threw up. The car sick people didn't feel so great, but nobody got sick. When they stopped for gas on the way, the oldest boy noticed the chain and asked why the chain was attached to the bumper and dragging the ground? He was sworn to secrecy because they didn't want anyone to know about the chain until they reached New Mexico. Anyway, that was years ago and they have told other families about the chain and it worked for them too. The last time I went with them somewhere my niece was sick the whole way. We stopped for gas and I looked and saw that the chain had worn down and was not touching the ground anymore. Hmmmm, it really seemed that it works. Instead of ginger snaps, I would try the real thing. I would put a piece of ginger inside a piece of raw meat and give it to the dog and see if that helps. |
Well the chain thing sounds interesting, on the ginger, how soon before the trip should i make him eat it? |
Motion sickness ia a very real thing. I get sick in cars, planes, trains, boats, floats, snorkling in the ocean (no motors). It's a miserable feeling. I always say if anyone ever invents brain surgery for motion sickness, I'll be one of their first candidates. I use ther strongest meds possible---scopolamine patch behind the ear. I still got sick when I was snorkling. |

Actually, I managed to get back onto the boat that took us out . They had told us that if anyone were to get sick, they should "feed the fish". They had quite a mealfrom me. There was a bathroom on the boat, but they didn't want us to use it for that purpose because of the smell. |

Well I did to try some fresh ground ginger in his food and it seemed to work just fine. |
