Bevo's Test Results back from A & M The vet called at work and asked me to come see him after I got off work...He got the Bile Acids Test results back from A& M... pre 1.0 post 53.06 Said not to panic......Told me a bunch of stuff...And said I could call him back tomorrow if I can not remember all we talked about....I was kind of numb.....He wants to run another set of labs first....He talked differ options for treatment.....drugs and diet, etc.... Did say to keep him on the same diet and treats that I have been feeding. The only things he gets is Wellness Super 5 mix for puppies(yellow bag) and yorkie yummies....He said great- don't change anything.. He consulted with two other vets in the office and they called a dr from A&M and decided to go this route.... I am to monitor his intake and outtake so to speak....Keep track of how many puddles and poops...Thank Goodness for potty pad I hope I am making sense.....I just was not totally prepared for this....He also said some about Addison's disease...I want to read up on that... Does this make sense to you guys???? Any suggestions? Joyce |
Yes - don't panic. His post is a little high. Normal is under 20 - So this could be a mild MVD issue. What other test do they want you to do? I would do a complete blood panel, urinanaylsis and a Protein C and then repeat the Bile Acid Test in about a month. I would not feed anything that contains, red meat, exotic meats or organ meats, so I would pas on those yummies for now if the are the liver flavor :( |
Yes, we are doing a complete blood count, chem 12 and a ProtienC (I think) We are having it done Monday morning.... Joyce |
You can rule addisons out pretty easily by first doing a baseline cortisol test. If baseline is within normal range it's not addisons. If cortisol is less than normal you would then do further testing. I just did this with lacy because of her GI issues and her cortisol was normal. Most likely the high BAT is due to MVD or even a shunt. However it could be due to another issue with the liver. In our case lacy had hepatic lipidosis, which is uncommon in dogs but is probably related to IBD which is what she most likely has. When we got high bile acids we did an xray, urinalysis, and blood ammonia test. Blood ammonia will be high with a shunt. You can also do a protein c test. I then chose to do an ultrasound because the radiologist is really skilled and we really didn't think it was a shunt anyway. You could also do a scintigraphy which is more accurate. Finally we did a liver biopsy. All this was done at a&m |
I'd do the Protein C test myself that will completely rule out shunt. Post numbers under 100 are usually not a shunt but a Protein C test will for sure rule out shunt and it's less invasive as a liver bioposy or a stignigraphy (sp). I'd want to rule out shunt first with the Protein C test and then go from there...of course this is what I would do :) Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
