10 Week Old Will not Eat anything!?! HELP I have an almost 11 week old female yorkie who will not eat anything. I have tried everything....baby chicken food, yogurt, cheese, ceasar's puppy food, predigree can, predigree dry, bil-jack dry, rx a/d from vet, science diet puppy from vet, canned chicken, grilled chicken. I don't know what else to do. I've had her for two weeks now. A little history on her...she was the only puppy born to her mother. The breeder stated she was eating predigree canned food, as well as dry predigree and black/gold puppy dog food, but had stopped eating the dry food a few days before I picked her up. When I picked her up she gave me a tube of Nurit-Stat and a container with Karo Syrup in it. She told me to give the Nurit-Stat two-three times a day along with the Karo syrup. She guided me during about the first week, but I haven't spoke with her in a few days now. I have been feeding my little Sophie from a syringe of puppy canned food pedigree/ceasar mixed with water, giving her nurti-stat, and karo syrup 3 times a day. She will not eat anything on her own. I'm afarid to stop doing any of it. Last weekend I took her to the vet on Saturday and the doctor told me to stop doing the karo syrup and we ended up at the ER Sunday morning because Sophie had dropped into a hypoglymeic attack. I think Sophie is depressed. What I mainly need to know is do you guys think she will ever eat on her own again? Is there anything else I can try? How to I bring her out of this depression she seems to be in? By the way I'm a new Yorkie owner.....I love Sophie and I'm so afarid something is going to happen to her or that something is wrong with her. Please help! |
Hi, how big is she and what color are her gums? Did your breeder show you how to check the gums to see if she is starting into a hypoglycemic attack? Keep an eye on this for sure. You may be trying too many different foods, and you may be right about her being depressed a little about being away from her mother. She will start eating again on her own eventually. You just need to keep her in good shape for the next week or so. I've seen it take 2 weeks for a puppy to adjust to the new surroundings, so hang on. Try limiting what you are giving her. The chicken baby food is good to syringe and is healthier for her. A little rice that she may eat off your fingers -- just white rice. Put a little of the puppy kibble in your blender and make a powder. Leave a little dish in her pen where she can get it. Keep giving the Nutri-Cal (I think that is the same as Nutri-Stat) 3 times a day, about 1/2 inch. Make sure she is warm enough, puppies can't eat if they are chilled. Keep her close to you for comfort and reassurance. I'd switch to a good brand of puppy kibble. Not pedigree. There are articles on here about rating dog foods and what is in them. |
:thumbup::thumbup:Also try to boil some chicken, no skin, and some plain rice..Just hold her and feed her. I would take her back to the vet asap. Make sure its a Vet that knows alot about small breeds...Good luck and keep us posted.. Quote:

Also you might want to try this. I got it off the breeders section. Fading Puppy or Weak Puppy: Beef Liver Remedy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recipe for fading or weak puppy...from what Ive been told it is a true life saver!! Thought this worth passing on...print and kept for safe keeping! Beef Liver Remedy For Fading Puppies Large piece of Beef Liver - boil slowly in a small amount of water (5 minutes or until the blood comes out). Let cool-drain the liquid ONLY; 4 drops into a dropper and feed the weak puppy. First dosage every 2 hours for 12 hours, then every 4 hours. Continue for however long needed until the puppy is thriving on its own. Don't feed or use the liver itself, it is far too rich; use only the liquid |
How is the belly of the dog. Is it hard? Could it be that he feels pain? I ask because our small pup has not eaten for weeks and I've fed him. Until our vet found out that our baby had pain after every dinner and our intelligent little one so decided not to eat and in fact not to have pain. He now gets a special food, which in usa unfortunately does not exist (itīs called lupovet), he has no more pain and since he eats well by himself and has gain weight. Wish the best! |
All the suggestions are good that have been previously posted. I DO agree that you should give nutrical until you know that she is getting all the nutrients that she needs from food. I also suggest that you try a more premium food ( I have heard that canidae is a good canned food). Good Luck to you sweetie! |
On Monday at the Vet's office she weighed in at 1lb 3oz. The breeder did show me about her gums and they have been pinkish all this week. Thanks for all the advice....I'm gonna try the boiled chicken today and she how she likes that. I will keep you guys updated! Thanks again! |
Sophie was 1lb 3oz at the Vet on Monday. The breeder did show me about her gums and they have been pink all week, but last Sunday when we had to go to the ER they had started turning grayish. About her belly...I have never felt it to be hard. Truly to me her little belly always feels kinda empty. Thanks for the great advice. I'm going to boil her some chicken and rice today and search for a good puppy canned food. I think the canned food is the best place to start with her. The breeder said she had thought Sophie was teething when I picked her up, but I would assume she should be coming through that by now? Anyway...thanks again for the advice...I'll be keeping you all posted! Happy Sunday to everyone! |

a great warning sign is grayish gums. It shows that the blood sugar is down and if this happen it is absolutely necessary to give nutrical or calopet and take her to the vet. Again, good luck! :2smileys: |
