Walking on three legs/limping Yesterday morning Molly woke up limping. She sometimes walks on three legs. When I palpate her foot, knee joint, and hip joint, she shows no signs of withdrawal or pain. There is nothing festering in her foot. She's cautious, but still up and around and wanting to play. She doesn't appear ill in any way. My older Yorkie, Maggie, started limping several months ago and I ended up with a huge vet bill and advised to use chondroitin, which helped. Can I feel comfortable keeping an eye on Molly right now and give her chondroitin also? I know this makes it sound like I am not a loving responsible parent, but at the same time in this economy I don't know where I would get the money for another vet visit. Anything else in the possible diagnosis category that I should be aware of?:( |
You say she sometimes walks on three legs. If it's one of her back legs she won't put weight on it is very likely that she has luxating patellas and her knee cap has slipped out of the groove. She needs to see a vet. |
Oh I have to agree...She could have Luxating Patella or Legge Perthes Bc she is holding it up makes me believe that it hurts or it is very uncomfortable, or it gets stuck in the out position. Yes I think she needs to be on a daily joint supplement and I think she should see a vet :( |
I would definately take her in to the vet. Especaially if she can't put any weight on her back leg . It is not right to allow your dog to go on without recieving propper medical treatment. PLease take care of her and do the right thing. |
My Piper had Legg Perthes. One day last December I notice her carrying her hind leg when she was outside. I thought maybe she didn't like the cold ground. After a couple days she was doing the same thing inside. She also let me bend her knee, feel her foot etc. and didn't seem to be in pain. After 10 days of the limping I brought her to the vets. When he extended Piper's leg straight behind her she started crying. He recomended x-rays and that's when the Legg Perthes was discovered. She had surgery the following week. If the limping continues you probably should bring your baby to the vets and have the leg checked. |

I would recommend taking him to the vet now because if caught early there are some methods they can try before surgery, Hopefully it is just a sprain but I would have it checked just to be safe. |
